Cemeteries may be the last places you would like to visit on a holiday but with me you'll find this experience both exciting and rejuvenating. Meeting at Mile End Tube station in the heart of East London we will explore 2 local Cemeteries, their occupants, their history followed by a sumptuous East-ender afternoon tea.
I have lived in East London for over 35 years now and I love its ruggedness and its wonderfully diverse local people, their stories & their businesses. I'm the co-founder of London City Steps, a social enterprise based in Bow East London. I promote rugged London and its wonderfully diverse local people, their stories & their businesses.
Sumptuous East-end Afternoon tea
On arrival at the iconic Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park we will venture off the beaten track to find the famous grave of Joseph Westwood who ran Joseph Westwood and Co, a shipbuilding company and to learn simple grave rubbing skills. We will visit the Holy Trinity site on Morgan Street now occupied by Epainos Ministries followed by refreshing afternoon tea.
Good walking shoes, wind guard for changeable weather and a smile
All 3 cemeteries are no longer used for burials, they are either nature reserves or are maintained by the local churches or Friends of the cemeteries so our grave rubbing workshops will in no way disrespect the needs of living families or loved ones.
