Mt. Rainier is home to more glaciers than any other mountain in North America outside Alaska--25 named glaciers in all. This hike takes you into the Glacier View Wilderness in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest immediately to the West of Mt. Rainier National Park, and delivers you to the best views of the south-facing glaciers while avoiding the crowded trails inside the park. On a weekday you may have the trail and its epic lookout all to yourself. I pick you up at any one Seattle-area hotel or Airbnb lodging and drive you on a scenic journey to the remote trailhead. The hike begins at 4,500 feet (442 m) where we'll hike 2.5 miles (4 km) to a stunning overlook, gaining 950 feet (290 m). Along the way you'll enjoy learning about the local fora and fauna and have a few peek-a-boo views of The Mountain. The climax arrives as you make the last short climb to Glacier View overlook and find yourself face to face with 6 of Rainier's glaciers. You'll enjoy a gourmet lunch here while taking in one of the few 360-degree views available anywhere near Mt. Rainier. On a clear day, all the other major peaks of the Washington Cascades are visible--Mt. Baker, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Baker--and even Oregon's Mt. Hood. After lunch, we'll explore an alpine lake and meadows (or both) before enjoying a snack and drinks at a mountainside tavern and returning to Seattle. Total hikes miles: 5-8.
I’m passionate about the unique geography and wild places that envelop Seattle and define the Northwest, and I enjoy sharing them with others. I have been hiking and backpacking throughout the U.S. for 30+ years and I know how to create an outdoor experience that will show you why Seattle is the big city where people move to get closer to nature. My Cascadia Hiking Adventures are not your typical packaged tour. For each of these private adventures, I pick you up in my private unmarked Subaru Outback (maximum of 4 hikers) at your Seattle area lodging and return you there. You never share an adventure with others. Each of my adventures is customizable to meet your specific interests.
Energy bars, local seasonal fruit, and a gourmet lunch of your choice.
Water in a reusable bottle as a memento of your adventure.
I provide round-trip transportation in my private, unmarked Subaru Outback.
Day packs, hiking poles, rain gear if needed.
