In this experience you'll learn about the cornerstones of Mexican history - in a fun way, and with the calm and quiet of the Centro Historico at dusk. NO boring lectures or robotic speeches. Rafa connects Mexico City's most important history to real life, to the modern day city, and the archeological traces of the Aztecs and Conquistadors - right there under your feet. Then there's the MEGA fun bit. Between history chapters, Rafa takes you to his most favorite kitsch, hideaway cantinas. These bars are extremely traditional places to drink - heavy on Mexican nostalgia, and light on attitude. They are almost always are hidden from the street (so that in the old days their male patrons could hide from the family!) and are living time-capsules of old Mexican culture. Each one has some kind of surreal -if not totally wacko- decor theme. Often there's an old-school jukebox, a folkloric selection of drinks, and a team bow-tied waiters (who take their job seriously). It's a great photo stop, and no-pretense way to get inside a local life, before venturing back outside again to capture the facades of the city's most grandiose buildings.
I'm Laura Ainscough, Founder of Stylewalk MX. Our professional guide, Rafael Rios, is the co-host for this history-rich walking tour. Rafa is an accessible, friendly expert in Mexican History and Art History. He was an Official Guide at the National Palace for FIFTEEN years. He educated literally thousands of international visitors to the Zocalo, bringing to life this pivotal site in Mexico's pre-hispanic and colonial past. Guests included diplomatic officials, prestigious academics and, of course, a plethora of Diego Rivera fans. Rafa was also Staff Writer for 'Efímera' for 10 years - a monthly Mexican Culture & History national publication. Rafa originally got into guiding and writing because he is an avid reader. The more he read, the more he became interested in Mexican culture, and to question its often contradictory idiosyncrasies
