I firstly deliver a creative writing workshop covering story structure and poetry techniques, giving attendees the tools with which to express themselves in writing. Next, with my extensive knowledge of the area, I take them on a guided hike into the hills or around the lakes (depending on ability...and weather conditions!) and help them to be inspired by the glorious scenery in order to express themselves through the written word . I like to give people constructive feedback on their work, and suggest improvements or additional ideas. I encourage people to attempt a variety of genres and techniques in order to expand their skillset. I will also make a photographic record of the retreat, so that participants have a visual 'scrapbook' to take home with them, alongside their completed written works. There will also be free time for participants to explore the area for themselves, and/or spend some quality quiet time working on their chosen writing projects...with feedback from me if requested. I find it highly beneficial to share ideas and to discuss these with others, so I encourage plenty of group interaction and socialising - having meals together for example - as well as providing much needed 'alone time' for those who prefer it, to create that literary masterpiece!
I am a qualified Secondary school English Teacher, and also a Queen's Scout, with over 20 years experience of hillwalking, including use of map and compass, leading groups of people into the hills; primarily in the Lake District, but all over the UK. I am keen to set up a Wellbeing Retreat experience, leading small groups of people onto the Lakeland Fells, engaging in meditation to clear the mind in order to express themselves through the written word. This may be in the form of poetry, creative writing or indeed journalling/blogging. I would teach the techniques required to plan, shape and create various genres of writing via workshops, and then guide the group into the hills in order for them to reconnect with Nature and produce a piece of writing which is personal and tailored to each individual, depending on their reasons for writing.
Food provided will depend on which location the retreat is being held: I plan to have several different accommodation…

It has the deepest and the longest Lakes in the country, and lots of crags, caves and ridges to climb and explore. On wetter days we can visit the literary homes of famous writers from Wordsworth to Beatrix Potter. Or just escape into one of the many tea rooms!
