Travel back in time to 1893, when famed American artist Louis Comfort Tiffany opened his own glass furnaces in Queens, New York. There, Tiffany's team of skilled chemists experimented in secret to create new kinds of highly-artistic glass the world had never seen before. From sculptural “drapery” and “ripple” glass to “streaky” and “spotted” glass in every imaginable color, their results were astonishing and forever changed the art of stained glass. Today, The Neustadt counts over a quarter of a million examples of Tiffany's remarkable glass in its holdings, now persevered as an archive of his revolutionary contributions to this centuries-old art form. Join us for a special, behind-the-scenes tour to explore the only remaining repository of this important material and discover the secrets behind Tiffany's groundbreaking innovations in glassmaking. You'll begin with an introduction to Louis Comfort Tiffany and learn what made him such a remarkable artist. Then you'll get the chance to explore our Tiffany Glass Archive, organized by glass type, color, and size, and find out how this special collection came into being. Finally, you'll see rare examples of glass specially displayed for you to take a closer look. There will be breathtaking lighting demonstrations that bring the glass to life, and you'll also discover the secrets behind how these unique pieces of glass were made.
