Thanks to Aotearoa being so far from anywhere our favourite, defenseless & flightless bird the Kiwi was left alone for many a century. Enter human beings and now they are one of the most endangered birds on the planet. And yet this little battler survives, even here on the outer edges of Auckland. To spot the Kiwi though is an adventure and patience will be required. We'll take you to a protected wildlife haven, where the Kiwi are safe in the forest from unwanted introduced predators. We'll walk through an amazing forest trail, in which our red lights will cast amazing shadows on the huge trees that adorn the path. It's Kiwi spotting time. Our national animal is a creature of habit, so we will find the spot we know he likes to cruise by. Sitting comfortably, we listen, drink coffee or hot chocolate and eat some cookies. We must be very very quiet and listen out for the crunch on the forest floor as he starts his evening rounds. Hopefully you will get a sight of the elusive Kiwi, one of the rarest birds in the world. After stalking out our weird national bird, we'll go to a secret spot and see our forest glow worms. They appear everywhere along the trail, but we know of a cool nook where they have a prime location to show off their lights. We'll give you the story of the 'Titiwai' and get up close to these little twinkling wonders.

Hi we are Kate and Dale, we are local experience hosts here in Auckland. Kate is a nature nerd of the highest order, consistently surprising guests with her vast knowledge of and tales about all the things that live in the forest! Kate has been trekking around the undergrowth for many years and loves getting out into nature, it's hard to get her to come home! Hi i'm Dale. I'm also an experienced host and absolutely love going to the forest at night. The idea that there is nothing to kill us in the forest is a bonus for me. The first time i saw a little Kiwi wandering around in the wild was so awesome, helping others to experience it is super exciting. Kate & I are engaging, interesting and always game for adventure. We hope you come out with us for this one off chance to see the Kiwi flourishing and going about it's business in the wild!
Cookies, slices or similar late night treats
coffee or a hot chocolate at our kiwi spotting location
One torch/flashlight each to use for the experience
The Regional reserve that we visit is a stunning mix of forest, farmland and coastline. The forest has been protected by a massive predator free fence which means more than 20 Kiwi have been re-introduced within this area in the past few years. This is without doubt the most accessible location to Auckland to see Kiwi. The forest is also full of Glow worms, native New Zealand birds and of course at night time our native owl the 'Ruru'.
最多可供6位年滿9歲的旅人參加。 Please do not bring a vehicle to the ferry building. If you are driving to the center of the city you will need to allow plenty of time to find a park. If possible we recommend public transport to the pick up point or catch an uber.
Solid (clean) walking shoes
Our forests are perfectly safe at night, we have no native snakes, spiders that can kill you or crocodiles like in Australia! Please let us know if you have any visual impairments or trouble getting around. The path is full of tree roots and you will need to be a confident walker.
