We will meet you at the shores of Lough Gill, one of the most famous and beautiful lakes in Ireland. Fabled in the poetry of W.B.Yeats for the Lake Isle of Innisfree, we will prepare you for a trip that will surprise and delight you at each step along the way. After an initial chat about the trip plan, and learning a little about you, we will get you ready for the journey, giving you the equipment that you will need, and showing you the techniques required for the outing.Don't worry, you won't need to be a super athlete, just a regular level of fitness will be fine! We will then launch onto the Garavogue river, a slow moving river that is the gateway to Lough Gill (meaning the "bright" or "white" lake in Irish) and make our way to the entrance of the lake.Depending on the time of year we will pass a variety of water birds, from hooper swans to kingfisher and maybe even see a shy otter chasing after equally shy salmon. We will travel through mixed features, from alluvial forests to old sessile oak woods, all contained within an area designated as a Special Area of Conservation and make our way to one of the many remote islands that are in the lake. There we will stop for a walk around, take some time to reflect on the history and folk lore of the area and make ourselves a hot drink and some breakfast or lunch. After a break, we will head back towards our starting point.
The west coast of Ireland has some of the most beautiful and intense sea kayaking in the world.I have been immersed in the ocean firstly as a surfer and more recently as a sea kayaker, for the past 30 years or so.During this time I have kayaked in all sorts of conditions, and in many locations from the very top of Donegal, right down to the south west tip of Cork. I am currently a British Canoeing qualified 4 star Sea Kayak Leader, International Sea Kayaking Guide Association trained aspirant guide, accredited Failte Ireland Coastal and Marine guide as well as having a Remote Emergency Care level 3 first aid qualification. I have taught thousands of people to surf as I am also a ISA level 2 surf coach. Most recently I spent 2019 working as a kayak guide in Norway, showing travellers around the Hardangerfjord in Southern Norway
