Traditional Chinese Opera, labeled as a "dying art" in Singapore, has deep history and culture that risks being forgotten in a metropolitan city. My partner and I are a couple who grew up, met each other, and aged through a lasting passion for Teochew Opera. We will bring you for a visit to a gem right in the heart of Chinatown, the Er Woo Traditional Opera Troupe House dating back to the 1950s. We will bring you back in time through artifacts, photos, and videos at the troupe house, introducing you to the history and evolution of the Chinese Opera art form and culture with the backdrop of our city's accelerated progress. Accessible only to members of the Opera Troupe, the shophouse serves as the go-to venue for the troupe's rehearsals for dwindling theatrical performances in Singapore. Equipped with exclusive Opera musical instruments, costumes, and props, you will get the chance to dress up as an opera performer and learn performing and singing styles with me. End your trip by sipping Chinese tea in the shophouse while overlooking the bustling streets of Chinatown.

Back in the 1950s and '60s, Chinese Opera was a popular form of entertainment art among teenagers. My husband and I had an avid interest in the art. My partner joined an opera troupe specializing in stage design and oriental lighting, while I performed as an actress in a variety of opera shows in Singapore. We met through a common passion for the traditional art, and continued the pursuit of Teochew Opera by organizing performances and bringing in directors from China to direct the troupe. As retirees, we now seek to cultivate a public appreciation for this "dying art."

The three-storey shophouse is located in Chinatown, right in the heart of the famous Smith food street, a 10-minute walk from Chinatown MRT Station, NorthEast Line NE4, and the Downtown Line DT19. We will walk you to the Opera Troupe house with a short introduction on the various Chinese dialect cultures in Singapore. The troupe house is for the Er Woo Teochew Opera Troupe, the first and one of three remaining Teochew troupes in Singapore.
Ivy and her family really made us feel welcome during our time with them. They are all very passionate, knowledgeable and extremely willing to share their stories with us. The whole experience is very fun and engaging, especially when we tried on the costume and did some classic Opera moves. We also loved the short tour on route to the location. They shared with us so many fascinating facts about Chinatown that we as Singaporean didn’t even know about. Overall, a wonderful experience and would highly recommend it!

This is a great, intimate look at an age-old art form, explained and demonstrated by passionate locals who are eager to share their cultural knowledge with the world. The old shophouse surroundings, the antiques, the costumes, the singing demonstration, and the short walk through historic Chinatown with its theaters - it was all fascinating and I highly recommend the tour.

Meeting Ivy, Eric and Jadyn was one of the most authentic, informative and cultural experiences that I had during my stay in Singapore. The venue located in the middle of Chinatown is full of original and historical features and artefacts, this place breaths culture, history and art! The hosts bring you in the world of Chinese Opera unfolding its complexities, emphasising symbolism of the art, music, acting and dancing and the mastery of the performers. The experience is very interactive, I got to admire the original costumes and even wore them, I also got to play out specific characters which was a lot of fun especially when testing my vocal abilities! Ivy and Eric are great source of information not only on the subject of Chinese Opera but on Singapore in general. They have given me some worthy recommendations for further travels and sightseeing. Overall, I highly recommend this experience if you want to try something a little extraordinary. It’s a close encounter with Chinese culture in a very friendly and relaxed setting.
