Sawara is located in the northeastern part of Chiba Prefecture, about 70 kilometers from Tokyo and 15 kilometers from Narita International Airport. Sawara is a place that prospered as a relay base for the Tone River water transport. Even now, there are still old city streets full of Edo emotion centered on the river. We'll paddle along the Onogawa, where old streets remain. The town retains the historical landscape and has been selected as an important traditional building group preservation area. After the town of Sawara, we'll head toward Yokotone lock gate made in 1921. This is the largest brick lock gate in Japan that is still in use today. We'll paddle the countryside and have lunch on the way. We'll also go to the historic district called Katouzu, where there's a canal with twelve small bridges. Then we'll pass through another small lock gate to reach the destination town of Itako. It will be a lot of paddling 15 kilometers (10 miles), but it'll be a unique opportunity to experience the water districts of Japan.
Being as outdoor guide especially with kayaking about for 20 years. I had gained experience as the guide in Hokkaido and Okinawa and traveled out of Japan more than 3000 km in total by kayak. I know special courses in the riverside historic district for kayaks from my experience as the guide here. I'd be glad if I could share the attraction of kayaking with you through this experience.
