體驗簡介

During this experience, you'll become a murabito—villager—at a kominka—old farmhouse. We'll meet at the station and then bike for about 10 minutes on a rural road to the kominka. We'll cook rice with firewood in an old-style cooking stove known as a kamado and prepare miso soup with fresh-picked organic vegetables from our garden for lunch. Then we'll walk through the village and hike up about 15 minutes to the Kyoto Taishakuten. It is a unique hybrid of temple and shrine established 1200 years ago and known for the 108 bells that you ring and pray, which is said to make your prayers come true. After our hike, we'll go back to the kominka for a relaxing tea ceremony. You can wear a Kimono if you'd like, and even try serving tea yourself. By doing so, you'll learn that each movement has meaning and is a minimal art. This is called wabi-sabi, which is translated as "conveying something in the simplest way, leaving a lot of room for interpretation and the aesthetic sense in Japanese art emphasizing quiet simplicity and subdued refinement." In fact, we call this kominka "sabi house," not only because it's rusty and rustic, but also because we can find the beauty in its withered things.
Other things to note
If the weather doesn't permit us to bike, we'll arrange a taxi to pick you up at the station—taxi fee will be at your cost. We may also change a part of our planned schedule depending on conditions.

My husband and I moved to this rural part of Kyoto over 20 years ago and raised our children in this abundant natural environment. For more than 10 years, we've been organizing activities for local children to play in the forest and appreciate the old lifestyle. We do this because there wasn't access for them to play in this wonderful environment and all the goodness of the old ways was quickly disappearing. Now they've grown to love and appreciate the life here. Together, with this young generation, we've renovated this old farmhouse by ourselves and invite you to experience the life here.

體驗地點

We will take you to a hidden kominka, which was recently renovated after having been vacant for half a century. We'll cook lunch together and afterwards, we'll walk the road leading from the quiet village to the mountaintop Kyoto-Taishakuten. It's a beautiful walk through the woods and as there are usually no tourists, we'll have the whole place to ourselves—no more waiting in line. We'll finish with you having your own private tea ceremony.

This experience was worth the time! The location is outside of the tourist infested city, and the hike to the shrine at the top of the hill is nice and leisurely. Lunch was delicious and culturally enriched, the tea ceremony itself was lovely. Great experience with great hosts!

I’m not kidding when I said this was my best experience on my first trip to Japan. Aiko and her family have been exceptional in their planning, setting up of the whole experience for us. The bike ride was such fun though my unfit body hurt much after that. It is something I’d highly recommend for all to try. Nanako the host’s daughter was most patient and tolerant of my slow pace! Next, the cooking of rice in a traditional pot was a sight to behold. The lunch was so yummy and we felt a sense of achievement in being a part of the cooking team. Next came the hike to the top of an old temple. That was a very peaceful and serene journey up there, away from the crowd and all. We culminated the day with the traditional way of brewing the matcha and serving it dressed in a yukata! Now, that truly is worth every penny spent . If any of you is thinking of experiencing something meaningful and less touristy when in Kyoto, look no further!
