體驗簡介

• Immerse yourself in the rich countryside life of Japan for a day
• Admire the pristine river and green towering mountains
• Participate in a sustainable organic farm project

Meeting near Nijo Station, or another convenient northern location. Relax on a scenic drive through the mountains to the north of Kyoto. Watch how the city peels away to reveal the true beauty of Japan. Along the way, learn about the history of the area and gain local insights about Kyoto.

Upon arriving at the old farm house, you will be able to take some tea and breathe in the surroundings. Then have a tour of the farm. Hear about the Japanese and international plants growing, and the obstacles of the local environment. During harvesting times, learn how to choose produce on size, firmness and color. Once confident you will be invited to help pick some veggies for customers, or do a few farm chores.

Next enjoy a lunch featuring seasonal produce. Choose a location to dine, either next to a mountain shrine, or on a scenic river bank. During the meal, plan your afternoon activities: river swimming; having a guided hike; visit a local farmers market in the mountains; a driven tour through village towns stopping at antique shops, local museums or to a mountain onsen (hot spring baths); or help the farm by participating in more farming activities. These afternoon trips offer something for all seasons.
Other things to note
The mountains catch clouds, so weather varies from the city, and changes quickly throughout the day, please bring waterproof or warmer clothing.

When I started farming in a small mountain village 11 years ago by myself, most thought I was a bit crazy. Now so many people come up for the day and fall in love. It doesn't take much for folks to enjoy themselves in such a beautiful place and everyone smiles a little easier going home. I also give presentations on farming and do what I can in Kyoto to provide opportunities for everyone to learn more. Nature and farming and have become my passion, I am lucky to have this to share.

Highly recommended! Chuck’s farm is about one hour drive from downtown Kyoto, and it is by a small river. In early December the view is perfect with all the trees of red leaves lining up along the river. Very picturesque. Chuck is a very friendly person and I feel that he is really serious about organic farming. In the morning we went to harvest some salad leaves, cabbage, daikons and radish in Chuck’s farms, and he taught me a lot about these vegetables. Some part of the farm is a bit muddy but Chuck has provided farm shoes with different sizes available. So I didn’t need to worry about getting myself dirty at all. Also, the farm house is small but clean with a modern toilet too. So it’s a real farm but on the other hand also easy for city people to handle :) Chuck made noodles with his vegetables for lunch, and we ate it sitting outside by the river (with all the tall trees and red leaves for background - good for photos!). Food is simple but fulfilling, and I particularly like the environment. I would say Chuck’s place is also a very nice location for a campsite. The view is good, with a river in which you may swim in the summer, and the place is not busy at all. I thought I only saw one truck passed by during the whole morning. After lunch Chuck offered several options for activities - hiking, tour to markets, onsen, etc. The hiking trail started right behind Chuck’s farm. I walked along it a bit, it was nice especially the sunlight in the afternoon goes along the same direction as the trail goes. However, the day I had this experience was very cold so I decided to go to onsen. Unfortunately the onsen was not open but then chuck drove me to a nearby cow farm. Surprisingly, that cow farm has a nice little bakery that makes and sells pastry and ice creams. I used to work in pastry kitchen so I was very happy to discover this hidden gem. All very good product with the cow milk there. On the way back to city, I saw a lot of little shops selling Saba (mackerel) sushi. Chuck told me it’s the “mackerel drive” where ancient Japanese transport the mackerel they got from the sea back to Kyoto city. So there a lot of really old shops specialised in that. If you do want to get a Saba sushi, let Chuck know - some of the shops close early at 4pm and I missed that. Overall speaking I would highly recommend this experience if you are into the nature. Although it is like a whole day thing, Chuck is a very nice person and he is easy to get along with. He shares with me about his personal life too, I can see his passion about organic farming. I do not drive, this trip is perfect for me because I would not be able to visit these places otherwise. Also, If you do like taking photos, you would enjoy this trip too.

I would wholeheartedly recommend a day with Charles on his farm for absolutely anyone! The place is just wonderfully real, warm and down to earth, and Charles is much the same. On top of that Charles is knowledgeable and passionate about his work and a sustainable way of life, and you can be sure to learn a whole lot about this and what it's like to run a small farm in Japan. Even if this isn't your thing, the feeling of sitting in front of a warm fire in a small wooden cottage deep in the Japanese mountains, eating a delicious hot meal and talking about whatever, should be worth the trip.

Chuck picked us up right on time and a max of 3 people was perfect to keep the experience intimate and enjoyable. It was a great experience to be exposed to some trivial information about Japan/Kyoto. Chuck is very passionate about local organic and sustainable farming but is also still learning. It was not time to pick or cut any veggies from the farm so there was not opportunity for some hands of help on the farm. So, please keep an open mind for the activities that take place. Kind of need to go with the flow and see what cards are in the hand. We lucked out with beautiful weather and even had lunch by the water which was extremely relaxing and pleasant. The hike through the private mountain was very eye opening and a very cool experience. We got to see some fascinating things you would never imagine. Sorry, no spoilers here. You will have to go check it out for yourself. Overall, a great experience to see the countryside of Kyoto. Feel free to let Chuck know what activity you prefer after lunch as he can arrange various activities if participants have different preferences.
