Up to four people may ride in my new Jeep Renegade for the short drive to the Devonian Fossil Gorge located approximately 4 miles north of Iowa City. During the drive I will explain how the gorge was discovered and give a description of the area's ancient geological past. Each person will receive a map of the gorge highlighting 20 discovery points and fossils along the one hour tour. Be sure to wear comfortable, casual clothes and slip resistant shoes.
Other things to note
The entire gorge is not handicapped accessible, but there are informational areas above the gorge that can be easily navigated. Children should be supervised by an adult while in the gorge area.

The Devonian Fossil Gorge was only recently discovered and offers an amazing glimpse into a 375 million year old seafloor and the fossil remains of the sea life that once inhabited the region when Iowa was south of the equator and covered by a shallow sea. Devonian age fossils are 200 million years older than the dinosaurs. On our tour we'll see a variety of brachiopods, corals and crinoids embedded in the gorge bedrock.
Carolyn seemed knowledgeable in fossil history and provided some nice background information on the area and history of floods. She offered transportation round trip. It was interesting to learn that Iowa is more than just agriculture and we gained new appreciation for our neighboring state...
