體驗簡介

John, your host, is a guide for Lost Lands Louisiana Environmental Tours, a group that is anything but your typical swamp tour. The mission of LLL is focused on educating people on the importance and impact of the Louisiana wetlands, and the devastation that’s caused by the everyday dredging taking place on the Louisiana coast.

After taking John's tour, you’ll see why the wetlands are worth fighting for, and why their loss will be destructive to the residents of Southeast Louisiana, the safety of New Orleans, and the economy nationwide.

John starts off with an in-depth audio-visual education on the history of this problem and the proposed cures from our staff of award-winning experts.

Then he takes you out for a first-hand experience in the beauty and peril of the largest wetlands ecosystems left in the lower 48 states. You’ll paddle quietly through cypress swamps guarded by alligators, turtles, snakes, owls, and eagles.

But you’ll also see the damage caused by the nation’s neglect and poor stewardship. Visitors who have taken the journey with John say it’s an experience they will never forget.

John has been a tour guide for Lost Lands Louisiana Environmental Tours since 2012, and an avid paddler in the swamps of Louisiana since 2007. Just retired as Director of International Studies at a local university, he has immersed himself in the problems facing Louisiana's disappearing wetlands. He and a small group of professional friends, including Pulitzer Prize winning writer, Bob Marshall, are passionate about helping others understand the very real dangers that our environment faces. John's greatest pleasure is taking small groups out on custom tours of the swamps.

I usually take guests to the Maurepas Swamp area about 27 miles west of New Orleans, but we occasionally go to other sites within a 35-mile range of the city.

Where to begin! The kayaking trip was remarkable, an adventure we will never forget. John is a fount of knowledge and was warm and gracious from first contact to the moment we said goodbye. We throughly appreciated his introduction to the area and lecture on the wetlands, hosted in his beautiful home, and better appreciated and understood what it was we were to be immersed in. The trip itself was simply breathtaking: weaving our way through enchanting canopies of bald cypress dripping with Spanish moss, we saw multiple alligators, Barred owls, Green herons, Snowy Egrets, woodpeckers, and mindbogglingly Enormous webs strewn by yellow garden spiders! It was fascinating, exhilarating and beyond our expectations. We are grateful to our host for his infectious love of the swamps and allowing for this extraordinary experience. I’d go on, but hope you get the gist. Do not hesitate to go on this excursion, you will be impressed.

The tour was quite amazing, this was my first time kayaking and I think it worked great. John is a great guide and taught us many things about Luisiana and the bayou. On our tour we saw several alligators, beautiful birds and plenty of spiders but most stunning was the beautiful nature. Felt very luxurious to be so close to everything and the only noise was what we made with our kayaks. This was the best thing during our stay in NOLA and we will definitely try to find more kayaking experiences around the world.
