We’ll meet outside the î site near the town clock.
When we’ve introduced ourselves we’ll set off walking past Seddon House which was our first Government Building. I’ll tell you the story about English Pioneer Richard Seddon who came to the West Coast and ended up being Premier of New Zealand. He was quite a character.
Afterwards we’ll continue our walk to the Heritage Area along the Hokitika River. Here you’ll see and hear the stories of the sailing ships that brought passengers and supplies to the West Coast.
Then we’ll try and work out how they fitted 80 hotels into the main street in the 1860s.
There’ll be plenty of time to take photos on our walk.
We’ll stop outside the Carnegie Building and hear how Andrew Carnegie the Scottish American Industrialist donated money to the colonies to build libraries.
If you are interested in this experience but can’t find a date or time to suit you please use the Ask Ann feature on the booking page to contact me to arrange a suitable time.
Other things to note
You don’t need to be extra fit. We’ll keep to a pace to suit the whole group. There are seats to sit on along the way.

I’ve lived in Hokitika for many years and really enjoy the history of the area.
I love telling visitors about our region. I’ve been an Airbnb host until recently.
I’ve worked in a Heritage Tourism business in outback Australia and I’ve been inspired by some of the tourist history walks I’ve done overseas.
The Luminaries, the Man Booker prize winner by Eleanor Catton is set in Hokitika. As well as a general look around town I’ll tell you about life in the 1860’s. Exciting times!

My family (3 adults and a 2 year old) had the great pleasure to take this walking tour. You stay in the township and relive it back in it's glory days. Ann brings many images with her so using your imagination isn't hard. She is very insightful and interesting to listen to. Highly recommended. Thank you again Ann. Now off to read the Luminaries.

I had a great walk with Charley, Ann’s associate this afternoon! It was fascinating to see the historical buildings and he even brought me inside some of them like the theatre! Time passed so quickly. It was really cool to see the place where The Luminaries was based on, I loved the book! I recommend this walk to get an in depth experience of historical Hokitika, especially if one is short of time! The walk is also easy to do so no worries there :)

We enjoyed our walking tour of Hokitika tremendously. What an interesting story this town house. And the connection the tour allowed us to make with Eleonor Catton's book "The Luminaries" was terrific. It was our first tour of this kind and we are very grateful to Ann for making it such a pleasure. Highly recommended!
