We’ll meet at historic Rippavilla Plantation and then set out to hike the battlefield and surrounding areas. The hike will be led by our resident Civil War experts and include a full exploration of all early 1800s buildings and grounds, as well as the significant aspects of the battlefield. Guests will retrace the footsteps of the Confederate Army, hike along the western flank and even explore the campsite local soldiers used on the night of the Battle of Spring Hill, November 29, 1864. Combining first person accounts, local stories and Civil War history, this immersive experience travels through time to reveal the gritty, complicated truth of our nation's bloodiest war. This two hour excursion will end with authentic, Southern fare from our favorite local restaurants.

We've been telling the story of the Battle of Spring Hill for nearly forty years. As a prominent Civil War site, our guides are highly skilled experts with a passion for Southern culture and Civil War history Rippavilla's longest serving tour guide, Chuck, has been a pillar of the Spring Hill community for decades. His love for all thing Civil War began early, he traces this passion all the way back to 1959. A retired school teacher, Chuck taught history at the local high school for 32 years and won Outstanding Teacher of the Humanities in 2004.
Located in the heart of Spring Hill, Tennessee, Rippavilla Plantation and its surrounding grounds feature a stunning 1850s Greek Revival mansion, family and slave cemeteries, original cabin for enslaved people, Freedman's Bureau School and field of the Battle of Spring Hill. Our mission is to preserve, restore and interpret the story of the Cheairs family and all those who lived at Rippavilla.

This experience will explore the entirety of the battlefield. As the Civil War was nearing its end in late 1864, a series of decisive battles took place in Middle Tennessee. The Battle of Spring Hill and what happened at Rippavilla influenced the following day’s Battle of Franklin and forever changed the course of the war.
Our Wednesday evening experiences will be on foot, guests should expect to walk about 2.5 miles. Our Friday morning and afternoon experiences will be by car, guests should plan to use their vehicle.
