First we will see what kind of book you wish to make by looking at some examples that I have made. Then we will start by learning how to handle and fold paper, make signatures and sew them into a book. Once you have learned a few basic techniques, then you will decide what book structure you wish to make for your book project. I will demonstrate each step of the book's construction, and then you will copy my example. Feel free to take photographs of the steps so you can make more books at home. Once the structure is complete, you can choose from a variety of colored materials to creatively individualize your own book. All materials and instructions are included. Bookbinding tools include sewing needles, X-acto knives, scissors and the board shear. Care and patience is needed to focus when using these sharp tools. Please consider this when signing up children to take this workshop. I will always be available if you have any questions or need help.
Welcome to Still Water Bindery. I apprenticed in a small hand book bindery in London, UK 40 years ago and have been binding books ever since. I have taught students from pre-school through graduate college level. I love to teach and share my passions. This workshop will use traditional bookbinding tools, and techniques that I have been perfecting for decades. Every workshop is new and exciting as I focus on what the individuals are interested in learning based on their skill level. No two classes are ever the same. We will work at your pace to complete a book. Come make some art in Vermont!
Materials and tools
We will use Still Water Bindery for your bookbinding workshop. This is located in the back yard, a short walk from the house where you will park. Please note that I usually stand at the work bench while making books, so we usually stand for the whole workshop. If you need to sit during this workshop, there is a stool or a chair for you to use.
最多可供4位年滿8歲的旅人參加。 Children need to be focused and responsible, and able to respect the work space and the sharp bookbinding tools. Previous interest in crafts would be helpful for young students, so that they will know what to expect when making books…
If you have some special papers you wish to use for your book, please bring them along.
Email me if you would like to meet at ANOTHER TIME or DATE for class, rather than those listed. I am happy to answer any questions to make sure this will be a wonderful experience for you.
