First we will meet at the trail parking area and cover introductions and general safety considerations before our trek begins. As we head out upon the trail, you will be provided with a water bottle and a pre-packaged snack. If food allergies or restrictions are a concern please let me know ahead of time so that I may cater to your needs. As we make our way up the trail I will be recounting the harrowing story of the 1910 fires and Ed Pulaski’s crew of wildland firefighters. I will also be sharing my experiences as a local wildland firefighter and what it’s really like to work the fire line. We will take breaks and rest as needed, or as we come upon natural features of interest. At these moments you may feel free to hand me your camera so that I can capture a memory for you to cherish. As we continue on up the trail to the interpretive site I can give you unique insight into what it was like to build this trail, because I spent six years building and maintaining it as a Forest Service employee! After our trek to the Pulaski Tunnel itself, we will stop at the interpretive site at the mouth of the tunnel for lunch before heading back down to our cars.
Hello and welcome to the Historic Pulaski Trail! My name is Haley and I’m a local Environmental Scientist and former Forest Service employee who has spent years lovingly maintaining trail systems on the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. As your guide you can expect a tour through the lens of a naturalist who can share the history of the trail and the 1910 fire, speak to personal experience as a wildland firefighter in the area, and discuss the unique ecology of our area, complete with botanical, wildlife, and fungal identification of fauna and flora we will encounter on our adventure!
Pre-packaged snacks. I am happy to cater to food allergies and/or restrictions, just let me know at least two days ahead of…
Look for a wooden footbridge and interprative signage. If you reach dirt road you’ve gone too far and need to turn around and head back down-valley.
