This is a peaceful walking tour of the Open-Air Folk House Museum located in beautiful nature. You will experience as if you are walking in the 17th-century countryside of Japan. 150 years ago, Japan started modernization and westernization. This museum exhibits people's houses before the modernization. It's an original Japan. But, it's a little different from cultural temples and castle buildings. Folk houses are not deluxe, not sophisticated, but deeply connected with people's lifestyles. There are more than 20 Japanese folk houses. Those were built from the 17th to the 19th century. Those are not reproduced models, but originals. Each house was built 100-300 years ago by a local family in the countryside Japan. About 50 years ago, the Kawasaki city government established this open-air museum. They disassembled the house and moved to the museum, and reassembled. Yes, every folk house in this museum is the real old one. The Gassho style folk houses near Takayama town are popular tourist sites, but too far from Tokyo. You can find some real Gassho style in this museum. You can walk into the building. You will understand the detail of the construction and the farmer's lifestyle with your guide. They display tools for agriculture. Occasionally, they offer a live demonstration of making traditional crafts.
