體驗簡介

In the Shadow of the Mountain explores the vibrant Jewish cultural life established in between Montreal’s Francophone and Anglophone communities from the 1910s to the 1960s. Visit the parks, streets, and alleyways at the foot of Mount Royal and discover Montreal’s Jewish poets—from literary icons like Leonard Cohen to lesser-known but internationally-appreciated Yiddish writers such as Jacob Isaac Segal and Ida Maze. Through the stories of writers, activists, and other idealists, this tour explores the dreams that Jewish immigrants had for their lives in the new world, and contrasts these utopian visions with the sometimes harsh realities they faced in this city.

My name is Zev! I have always been interested in how culture, history and place can come together in new and exciting ways to create meaningful educational experiences that transform how we learn and use city spaces. After completing my Master’s degree in city planning and design (with further academic background in history), I went on to found the Museum of Jewish Montreal in 2010.

Our tour guide was Sarah. She was pleasant and offered a very good tour of the history of the Jewish community of the area. I enjoyed her use of poetry throughout the tour. Even as a former Montrealer who visits this city several times of year, I learned a fair bit. Thank you Sarah!

Our guide was friendly and knowledgable. This was a valuable trip for me as I got to learn about the history of Montréal and understand how life used to be in here in the past. If you are considering taking a walk in Montréal, I suggest you take this trip!
