You will receive a kanji list and we will explore it while we walk around.
Chinese created many kanjis copying nature's shapes and that are the ones we will try to figured out first. To represent more complex and abstract ideas they just combined basic kanjis in a single one. We will explore some of this combinations. Some kanjis on the list appear frequently in public spaces and we will try to identify them in context.
The tour starts at Demachiyanagi station where we can see the confluence between Kamo river and Takano river. We will enter the sanctuary area of Shimogamo Shrine to first visit the Kawai Shrine, then walk along the Tadasu's forest to finally visit the Shimogamo Shrine itself.
In each place I will tell you stories to understand and memorize the listed kanjis.
Other things to note
-Wear comfortable shoes and clothes according to the season.

I'm a Japanese language teacher for 10 years and one of my passions is studying kanji's (Chinese characters) origins. What makes it fascinating to me is the way you can figured out ancient practices and concepts in just one ideogram. I like to use some traditional hypothesis on kanji origins and modern narratives to make kanji sticks in students mind. I want you to enjoy kanji's learning process while we walk around. You can use your new skill to identify kanjis during your stay in Japan! :)

Shimogamo Shrine was designated by Unesco as a world heritage site. It is a interesting place to talk about kanji because you can associate them to nature forms and religious aspects present inside the shrine boundaries. Good news: it is not crowded. :)

I had a great time with Michinobu! He picked out a very nice route to explain the Kanji. It wasn't full of tourists and yet the shrines and the area was very interesting. I not only learned about Kanji but about the are as well! I really liked that a lot. The atmosphere was very relaxing and nice and he made sure that I felt comfortable since it was very windy and a bit cold that day. Michinobu is very sympathetic and charismatic and even though I was the only one participating there where no awkward moments whatsoever. We talked about the Kanji and the area but also about personal things so overall it was an activity that was educating but also like a long walk with a new friend. If you have some spare time in Kyoto and are interested in the Japanese language, definitely book this activity! He also incorporated some surprising elements that I don't want to spoil ;) Make the walk yourself! Thank you for everything!

Michinobu was a lovely tour guide, we learnt lots about Kanji characters, really liked his explanations, diagrams, drawings and the association with what was around us. He also sent us a pdf explaining the 42 Characters we covered and a small gift to carry our little Kanji’s home with us. A perfect way to mix it up whilst sightseeing another beautiful temple.

Michisan was very accommodating. He really customized the experience to what my family needed. He even gave us many links for further exposure to kanji. To top it off, his wife made cute slipcases for us to put our kanji booklets in. It was a perfect outing!
