Is there paradise on earth? Yes - come into the gardens of the gods at Tofukuji Temple.
Explore three of Tofukuji's best gardens away from the hustle and bustle of the city. You will learn how modernism in the West influenced one of Kyoto's greatest garden designers, discover the hidden meanings behind the gardens' architecture, and see how ancient Japanese and Chinese ideas of the gods manifest in the three gardens.
We'll stop by a private home of an artist to have matcha green tea and sweets along the way.
I will also introduce you to several forms of meditation you can easily make part of your daily life as we explore the gardens. We will, after all, be among the gods and Buddhas.

Please come in clothing that make it easy for you to sit in, and shoes that are easy to slip on and off. The temples are cold and unheated in winter so please dress warmly and put on thicker socks.

Born and raised Buddhist in Singapore, Lee moved to Japan 7 years ago to major in politics & history at Waseda University. He now lives in the Tofukuji area and is developing a walking tour app for Kyoto. His fanatic interest in tea and the history of Shintoism and Buddhism led him to research the modern gardens of Tofukuji Temple. Walk in the gardens of the gods with Lee and discover for yourself the hidden stories behind some of Kyoto's best gardens.

Tofukuji Temple is Kyoto's largest zen temple complex. It has dozens of sub-temples, not all of which are open to the public, and not all year-round. Finding out which ones you can enter and should enter depending on the season can be difficult.
I have seen the temples in all the seasons because I live in the area, so I'll take you to three of the best depending on the time of year.

Lee was such a fantastic tour guide. You could really tell how passionate he was about the gardens by the way he told his stories. He was so kind to an older couple that was on my tour that it warmed my heart. He was very knowledgeable as well and even though I had done a hiking tour that morning and was very very tired, this tour was not boring in the slightest, it did make me feel more at ease. My view of gardens has completely changed thanks to Lee. I highly recommend this tour.

XJ was extremely knowledgeable in his content of the temples. He explained things in a way that were easily understandable. There were many things that were quite fascinating about the history and common practices of the monks, and we would have never been able to understand them without him!

It was a GREAT experience!
Lee is really kind, cheerful and knows so much about temples, buddhism, nature and so on.... he gave us plenty of informations about the sites we visited or got through and even lend us magnyfying glasses to look at different kinds of mousses.
He speaks perfect English, so it was easy to understand everything and communicate.
I really recommend and will have other tours with him if I go back to Kyoto.

Xianjie was well-prepared and well organized throughout the tour. He was conscientious about making sure the whole group gets the same experience with no one left behind. He took good care of my children who were extremely interested from beginning till the end of the trip, and rated the tour one of the highlights of our Japan trip!

This tour was amazing. Xianjie is very knowledgeable, warm and patient. We got to learn a lot about Zen gardens, design, meaning and learn a bit about Buddhism and Shintoism. XJ’s presence and voice added to the experience as his calm and wise demeanor really helped us feel the peace and joy of the gardens and temples. Highly recommended. Will do it again when I come back to Kyoto and would recommend to anyone coming as well. Also the tea house was really cool! All in all great experience.
