We will meet at Martim Moniz Sq. for Jewish History walk. After a brief introduction, you will realize how the jewish presence in the territory started even before Portugal was Portugal, and there were 4 jewish quarters in Lisbon. We will go to São Domingos Sq. and learn about how the relationship between the community and royal power changed slowly and what lead to the Jewish Massacre of Lisbon of 1506. We will keep going to Rossio, where the persecution by the Holly Inquisition started and and the meaning of “Conversos”, “Marranos”, New Christians” and “Crypto-Jews” will finally be understood. From there we will go to Baixa Pombalina and take a break to snack one of the most beloved pastries in the country that was brought to Lisbon by a II World War jewish refugee family. We will Stroll on onward to reach the oldest part of the city, the neighborhood of Alfama where we can see the remais of the last Jewish quarter and understand how the community lived. From there, we´ll go to Lisbon´s main Square and on the way learn about the return of the community to Portugal and how a portuguese consul became Righteous Among the Nations, by disobeying official orders during the II World.
