Glynde has it's own train station (with a direct link to London Bridge or Victoria) so you can start your day with a 10 minute walk through the village to my studio at Glynde Gardens, or you can drive and park for free in the village car park by the cricket pitch nearby. We will have tea and cake in the garden (or indoors by the fire if it is cold) while we have a brief introduction to the day and each other. We will then go for our walk which includes a stroll through the back paths of the village and on to Charleston Farmhouse (home of Vanessa Bell and linked to the Bloomsbury group). Our walk is approximately 7 miles in total and takes us through the village of Firle and the grounds of Firle park. Lunch will be at the Beanstalk cafe which offers a choice of cream tea or other tasty lunch. During the walk we will be creating natural interventions and sculptures from found objects. Time is set aside to enjoy Charleston house, garden and galleries before walking back to my studio for more tea and cake
I am a full time artist who has exhibited at and curated many group and solo exhibitions. I am currently Artist in residence for the picturesque village of Glynde, in the Sussex Downs where I have been living for 7 years. I combine my artistic practice with my love of walking and nature in a series of group walks where participants enjoy the local countryside and then feed this experience into creating a piece of unique artwork. This can take the form of a found sculpture, stream of consciousness writing or a drawing.
Tea and cake will be provided
The studio is set in the grounds of my house, a gardener's cottage built in 1753. Glynde and Firle are traditional picturesque villages in the South Downs. Both have working blacksmiths which we will stop off at and lovely tea shops which we will also be visiting. The Beanstalk cafe is set off the beaten track with tables outside. Charleston Farmhouse was home to the Bloomsbury group and now has 2 gallery spaces as well as the house and garden
Walking shoes and clothes suitable for walking in
The walk to Charleston is approximately 3.5 miles (7 miles in total). We will be walking at a gentle pace but a moderate level of fitness is required. Lunch and Charleston admission are not included
