Highland Park has long been a haven for artists and musicians (it was the childhood home of Jackson Browne and where Billie Eilish was born and raised) and along with it comes a lot of amazing galleries, shops, bars, food trucks and restaurants. In 2018 it was listed as the 9th coolest neighborhood in the world per TimeOut Magazine. We'll meet in front of a coffee shop (also the location of a scene from the movie Reservoir Dogs) in the heart of the action on York. We'll make our way along York to get a sense of hustle and bustle behind this thriving community with a chance along the way to get a quick bite to eat at one of Jonathan Gold's top picks for LA or get a bottle of pop from an iconic soda specialty shop with 100's of selections. We'll then head over Figueroa to explore the other main drag of the neighborhood. On Figueroa, we'll check out the oldest bowling alley in Los Angeles (fully restored to all of it's 1920s glamor), learn about the history of the Highland Theatre, a former Vaudeville house, which also opened in the 20's as well as the music venues and record labels which call this part of Highland Park home.
I'm incredibly passionate when it comes to talking about history (I minored in it in college) and love sharing my favorite hotspots and the history of my neighborhood which is one of the oldest in LA, Highland Park. Nothing gives me more pleasure than getting new people a chance to learn about what makes this area so unique and special. I've done a lot of public speaking in various jobs in the arts and love to be a tour guide when friends and family are in town.
We'll be walking along the two main corridors of the area, York and Figueroa with a chance to stop at several iconic spots along the way. From our meet up spot where an iconic scene from Reservoir Dogs was filmed, to a landmark soda pop stop to the oldest (and coolest) bowling alley in LA, we'll get a chance to get immersed with the one of the most happening neighborhoods in the US.
sunscreen, comfortable shoes to walk in
don't forget sunscreen and there will be options along the way to choose where we make stops (and no pressure to go to the hidden bar at the end of the experience or to drink there if you do)
