Quinta do Anjo (Palmela - Portugal) | Land of cheese, bread and wine
Aldeia de Quinta do Anjo
Quinta do Anjo, a perfect harmony with the Natural Park of Arrábida, the production of sheep’s cheese (specially, the famous Azeitão Cheese), wine and regional pastries.
The Village Center
The Church Square and Sociedade de Instrução Musical – the local cultural society, founded in 1921 – are the village core, where all main events and festivities take place. Religious devotion is very dear to Quinta do Anjo, which celebrates, every November 1st since 1756, the Festa de Todos os Santos – the oldest festivity in the region, dedicated to All Saints, in appreciation for having been spared the 1755 earthquake.
Aldeia dos Bacelos
This is the oldest part of Quinta do Anjo, with prehistoric occupation. It’s composed of low white houses with patios to keep the sheep and goats, and holds most of the traditional cheese factories.
Angel's Fountain Farm (Quinta da Fonte do Anjo)
According to the legend, the farm’s fountain was protected by «a good angel, armed with a sword, therefore, S. Michael”, from a poisoning attempt, perpetrated by the evil forces, thus saving the population. This legend ended up naming the village that grew around it.
Mountain Range of Louro (Serra do Louro)
Up high, at the Mountain Range of Louro’s peaks, the impressive windmills are reminders of a traditional industry. The cereal grains were brought here to be transformed in flour. One of the mills is still active, producing flour and bread, and is available for a visit.
Pre-historical collective gravesites
One of the most important pre-historical findings in the region is a group of four artificial caves, dug on the rock, which served as collective gravesites for a period of nearly 1000 years, during the Chalcolithic Period (Copper Age).
Every year, when Spring begins, Quinta do Anjo hosts the Cheese, Bread and Wine Festival, attracting thousands of visitors. Cheese, Bread, Wine, Pastries, Crafts, livestock exhibitions, music, equestrian activities and sports are some of the main attractions of this festival.
Don’t forget to visit the wine cellars of Quinta do Anjo, associated to the Wine Route of the Peninsula of Setúbal, and participate in a wine tasting, with special attention to the award winning Moscatel de Setúbal, a sweet and aromatic wine, produced with muscat grapes.
