This was an extremely disappointing AirBNB experience. Cindy refused to let me stay in the suite I had booked, telling me a range of different stories designed to play on my sympathies about why this was. The person who was in the suite before me hadn’t moved out yet, and couldn’t because he was having some kind of unmentionable problems … if she tried to evict him she’d be in trouble with the police as he had been there a month and a half … then she couldn’t ask him to leave because his grandmother was sick … then it turned out it was *two* people staying in the suite … I felt lied to and manipulated. I was in touch with her several times prior to my arrival - including a few hours before - and at no point did she mention that I wouldn’t be able to stay in the suite I had booked, so I had no chance to book any other accommodation. She tried to persuade me to stay in a room attached to her house which was small and did not have a kitchen, which I needed. She then tried to get me to stay in two other properties a significant way from the area I needed to be close to, and they were both awful. The first was in a run-down share house with some male undergraduates who hadn’t bothered to clean the kitchen from the previous night’s meal. The second was in a dingy basement flat in an empty house which was even more run-down than the first, and from the moment she opened the door the smell of mould and mildew was overwhelming. It would not have been healthy to stay any length of time in there (and Cindy even admitted herself that the last person who had stayed there said it was too cold). In the end I had no other option but to cancel the booking and find alternative accommodation, when I was tired and jetlagged and needing to work. It was appalling host behaviour: when someone books, and pays, for accommodation a long time in advance, there is no excuse for a host failing to evict other tenants in good time: at the very least give your guest advance warning that the place will not be available as advertised so they have a fighting chance to rebook. Looking at the other reviews, I see this has happened to others: clearly people are being seduced by the nice pictures and desirable location of the “comfy suite”, and then when they arrive a bait and switch is pulled, and they have to go into one of the other (much less pleasant) properties. Future guests considering this property, please be warned that it may not actually be available when you arrive.
