My favourite places to eat out

Eating out is quite expensive in Norway, and since I am a bit of a foodie, I get really disappointed if the food isn´t up to the quality I eat at home. These are the places I go to eat.
This is a great place for coffee during the day and drinks at night. They have a large variety of amazing home made cakes, nice wraps and sandwiches, and a small a la carte menu. I really like their chicken salad.

Mjøl og meir (Flour and more) is a bakery/coffe shop which also is a training facility for people that need some help to enter into the workforce. They make the best breads, buns and cookies, and serve high quality coffee at very reasonable prices. They open at 07.00. Go there for an early lunch, they sell out early.

Maluns is situated in a quaint boathouse, and has boatloads of charm. Their terrace is sheltered from the northernly wind that is prevailant on sunny days. Maluns serves nice home-made food both for lunch and dinner, and it´s also a nice place to for coffee.

Runde Environmental Centre located on the world famous bird island Runde, are normally open for lunch and coffee during summer. They serve home cooked meals in a spectacular setting. Do check out the Runde gold treasure while you are there, and say hello from me (it´s run by my brother and my sister in law). Do hike up to watch the thousands of seabirds! My personal favourite are the puffins, that normally return to their nests around 19.00.

Willy used to compete on the Norwegian national Chefs team, and provides very high quality food at a Nice price. Willy has lovely Asian food, sushi and the best sour-dough pizzas I have ever tasted. Have you ever tried crispy duck pizza? Here is your chance. He’s also reknowned for his pastries.

Things to do in Flø

Flø is all about relaxing, releasing stress, enjoying the view, listening to the sound of the ocean, strolling along the beaches, watching eagles soar overhead, and seagulls chasing the eagles. Otters play on the beach, seals sometimes stare curiously at you, and several times a year orcas or whales glide by. However, if you want to be active, some of my favourite things to do are the following: - walk to the end of the road, through beautiful farms, and continue along the gravel road to the huge area of boulders. On the way you will pass viking graves, happy cows on their mandatory summer vacation outside, working farms. At the end of the road you see a huge boulder, and the area both before and after the huge rock, is famous for bouldering. If you are into bouldering and rock climbing, let me know, and I will help you find the guides. By the ocean below the boulders there are several tidal pools where the water is warmer than in the ocean itself. - walk up the second road to the right which will take you to the paths leading to the prominent mountain behind the house (Midtfløhornet or Veten) as well as Mount Roppehornet, the prominent mountain to the south, as well as lake Brørevatnet. It´s possible to drive to Brørevatnet, but it is a toll road. You just sign your name, and put the money in an envelope, which you put in a mailbox by the road. Typically Norwegian. - Walk over to Hugo Opdahl art gallery, (a 500 meters walk) to take a look at their exhibition and enjoy a cup of coffee. - Walk over to the campsite (Flø Feriesenter) and buy an ice cream, and explore the amazing sugary white beach below the cabins. - Go sit by the row of red boathouses right below the gallery if it´s a sunny but windy day. The boathouses face south, and are sheltered from the northern wind which is predominant on sunny days. - Book a dinner at Andreasgardengjestehus.com

Sightseeing

The city of Ålesund is built on seven islands and has quite a few stunning sights. It was completely devastated by a fire in 1904, and was rebuilt in German Art Nouveau ( Jugendstil) with massive aid from Kaiser Wilhelm. One of the main streets in Ålesund is therefore named Keiser Wilhelmsgate. Hotel 1904 was one og the first buildings to be erected after the fire, and it has been lovingly restored by the prizewinning Invit arquitects, ego currently run the hotel. The hotel has a lovely indoor / outdoor lunch restaurant called Green garden. as well as a lovely courtyard and a design shop.

The island of Runde is home to both the southernmost seabird sanctuary in Europe, and also to the largest coin treasure found in Europe. Visit the Runde Environmental Center for information about the birds and the treasure, as well as for coffee, cakes, souvenirs and clean public toilets. You can also book boat trips to see the bird cliffs from the ocean, weather permitting.

If you want to see the fjords, choose the still largely untouched Hjørundfjord, which is only an hour away from Flø. Spend a day visiting the amazingly beautiful fjord. Drive to Sæbø and have an ice-cream in the quaint lokal store. Take the ferry to Trandal for lunch in it’s rustic restaurant and have a go on their photogenic swing. Then cruise on in the ferry to go on to Union Hotel in Øye, where royalty spent their summer vacations in the late 1800’s and the early 1900s. Here you can book afternoon tea or dinner, or just have a coffee in the historic environment. Everywhere in Hjørundfjord there are iconic hikes and views, so bring your hiking shoes, a water bottle and some food just in case.
