This is one of the most unusual and most popular falls in the South by virtue of its easy access along scenic mountain US 64 West, 2.45 miles from town. The falls drop for 120 feet. During cold spells, the spray creates a large mound of ice at its base. If it stays cold long enough, the falls will form one giant column of ice.

Just down the road from Dry Falls is a popular swimming hole. For the brave, one can jump off a boulder into the Cullasaja River. From downtown Highlands, drive 6 miles on Hwy 64 West & pull over on the right or left.

Overlook the town of Highlands (especially during sunset) on a large granite mountain face. It’s a short half-mile walk to the top. Park in the gravel lot on the right, a half-mile outside the center of Highlands East on Main Street (across from the Nature Center).

If you want to drive “off the beaten trail” - visit the Iron Bridge between Cashiers & Highlands off of Whiteside Cove Road taking Bull Pen Road into Nantahala National Forest that will cross over the Iron Bridge. There are trails to go to the water, but be careful! You can dive in from the rock at the bottom of the fall. Or hike up to the beginning of the falls and enjoy the beach area!

Whiteside Mountain is the oldest mountain in the U.S. It’s an easy to moderate hike to 4,940 ft elevation. One direction has a steep incline & other direction has many steps. We like to take the steps up and follow the gravel path down.

My favorite restaurant and bar in Highlands! We have been to this place the many times to eat when we lived downtown. The cocktails 🍸 are made by a mixologist. The food is amazing with unique dishes you never thought of. It’s the only rooftop bar in Highlands.

There is a short cut to the old stone and wood fire tower at 5,127 ft in elevation. Just up the road from Bowen Grove on Mill Creek. Follow the location listed for this hike (199 Cloud Catcher Lane) you will find yourself on a gravel driveway (this drive is pretty narrow, up-hill and has some bigger rocks in the middle -- I would recommend taking a vehicle that can accommodate). Once on Cloud Catcher Ln, you will go about .75 miles to a dead end in the woods, with a small area to park/turn around. Neighboring private properties are also close by so please respect the "No Trespassing" signs posted on their properties. The trail starts from the small parking area, marked by a small US Forest Service sign, detailing the Yellow Mountain Trail. The trail climbs out of the gap, using switchbacks and some rocky terrain as you make your way to the top. The trail is well maintained and while it is not marked by blazes and with very few signs, it is very obvious where the trail leads. About .1 miles from the top, the trail will intersect with the other trail coming from Cashiers. There are signs at this intersection that show which way to continue. This is an awesome spot to go and relax for the afternoon, catch the sunset/sunrise, snap a few pics or even spend the night. You can't beat the views and awesome hike to get there.

A natural 10 ft high rock face water slide on the Chattooga River. This is a very popular spot during summer. You can slide down the rock, cannonball into one of the potholes or just wade in the pool below the rock. From the center of Cashiers follow Hwy 107 South for 1.9 miles. Turn right on Whiteside Cove Road for 2.8 miles reaching the small bridge over the Chattooga River. Park in the gravel parking area and take the trail to the Sliding Rock.

Great sandwiches! Take out style, so order at the window of the Cashiers Farmers Market and enjoy at the picnic tables in the courtyard. My favorite is the “Pulled Pork Cuban” or the Wednesday special “Fried Chicken Sandwich” - order this with a side of potato salad!

How to say “Cashiers”

The locals pronounce it as Cash-ers. The story behind the name is the Valley was named after a Bull named Cash. The town was originally named in old records “Cash’s Valley”, but when they went to record someone mispronounced the name as “Cashiers Valley”.
