Guidebook for Cedar Creek on Lay Lake

Fishing and lake recreation

Lay Lake is a 12,000-acre reservoir located thirty-five minutes south of Birmingham off I-65. The primary uses for this reservoir are hydroelectric generation and recreation. Lay Lake is the oldest lake on the Coosa, having been created in 1914. It is popular for tournament fishing and boating recreation. Because there are a lot of stumps that were left in Lay Lake when it was built, it is very important to stay within the channel markers on the lake. When heading upstream, keep the red markers to your right. When heading downstream towards Lay Dam, keep the green markers on your right. Other local attractions include DeSoto Caverns, Morgan Creek Winery, Kymulga Grist Mill Park, Old Baker Farm, and Butler-Harris Rainwater Museum.

The city of Sylacauga has many nicknames, including “The Marble City” and “Alabama’s Best-Kept Secret”. It has been known for its marble industry for the past couple of centuries, but more recently, and more bizarrely, it was also the first documented site where an object from outer space – Hodges Meteorite – fell from the skies and bruised a citizen! If its fascinating heritage wasn’t enough to tempt you to the city, Sylacauga is also surrounded by historical sites, lush forests, caves, vineyards and lakes. Things to do in Sylacauga, AL: the Talladega National Forrest, Blue Bell Creamery Tours, the Kymulga Covered Bridge & Grist Mill, Comer Museum & Arts Centre, Buttermilk Hill Restaurant, FarmLinks Golf Course, Morgan Creek Vineyards, and August’s Barbeque.
