On the land where the church is located, there was an old Greek Orthodox cemetery and a wooden church dedicated to Aya Yorgi. On the grounds that it could not meet the needs of the Greek Orthodox community of the period, it was decided to demolish the church together with the cemetery and build a more magnificent church in its place. Based on the drawings of the Greek architect Potesaros, the building, which Vasilakis Ioannidis Efendi continued to build, was laid on 13 August 1876 with the permission given during the reign of Sultan Abdulaziz, and the official opening was held on Sunday, September 14, 1880, which coincides with the Feast of the Cross. The transfer of the cemetery was made to the Pangaltı district in 1876. The church, which is located in a large garden surrounded by high walls, is a masonry structure with a Greek cross plan, with a central dome. It lies on an east-west axis. There are two four-storey, domed, Gothic style bell towers located symmetrically on both sides of the entrance façade and also the narthex. The twelve windows in the dome drum symbolize the twelve apostles of Jesus. Just like in Hagia Sophia, there are frescoes of six-winged Seraf angels on the four pendentives carrying the dome.
