Sightseeing

Rawene township (about 20 mins drive) This cute historic town has a ferry going to Kohukohu, an amazing 'games shop' (board games/ puzzles etc), a mangrove walk, tyre swing, The Boatshed cafe on stilts over the water, Historic Clendon house (my primary school aged children loved it), and The No 1 Art gallery, that always has an interesting collection of local jewellery, textiles, ceramics and art. There is a local weekend market (check day and times) and a couple of interesting craft/second hand shops. The Art Gallery also makes the best fresh fruit ice cream you will ever eat for $5!

Waiotemarama Waterfall walk A relatively easy 20 min walk to the waterfall (there are steep steps in part). You can swim at the base of the waterfall. A very steep 10min climb takes you to the top of the waterfall where there is another swimming hole. Waiotemarama Gorge road is one of the first roads on the right after leaving Opononi township (in the direction of Rawene).

The natural swimming pools off Arai-Te-Uru reserve (signals point lookout). Drive up to the top of the reserve and take the path furthest from Omapere, down to the beach below (If you are facing the lookout/point it runs down to the left). Around the base of the point are a series of pools in the volcanic rocks. They are filled by the tide each day and warmed by the sun. Some are good to sit in, some you can swim in. Best to go at low tide.

Waimamaku estuary and beach (5 mins drive from Omapere in the direction of Dargaville) A stunning surf beach. Follow Waimamaku Beach Road to the end. You have to walk along the river to get to the beach. The estuary is brimming with life and you can usually see large numbers of whitebait making their way out to see. The beach is vast and beautiful.

Waipoua Forest A 25-minute drive takes you into the ancient and humbling world that is the Waipoua Forest. This superb forest sanctuary abounds with rare native New Zealand flora and fauna, mighty kauri tree, kiwi, feather-like ferns and subtropical rainforest. The forest hosts the largest kauri tree in the world, Tane Mahuta, which is named after the mythical Maori god of the forest. The tree stands close to the road, is around 51.2 metres high and estimated to be between 1500 and 2500 years old. There are many walks through the forest to the various stands of trees. For day or night guided tours of the forest contact Footprints Waipoua 09 405 8207

Things to do on the water

Fishing Hokianga is one of New Zealand's undiscovered big-game and sport-fishing hot spots. Just 15 minutes from the jetty you can catch huge striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, kingfish, snapper and giant bass to name but a few. You can fish at the blowhole, surfcast off the beach, or drop a line down from the wharf. If you are more adventurous, arrange a charter to go crayfishing or line fishing, contact Pete at Hokianga Express 09 405 8872. Big game fishing is also very popular from January until April. Check out hokiangafishingclub.co.nz for the latest news on fishing in the Hokianga. There are BOAT RAMPS at Omapere and Opononi.

Diving You can charter a boat from one of the many local operators to go scuba or free-diving. In season, you can harvest many varieties of shellfish such as mussels, scallops, paua (abalone) and kina (sea urchin) or simply enjoy looking at the plentiful sea life. Snorkel straight off the beach or collect mussels off the rocks.

Surfing Hokianga Harbour has many beautiful swimming spots. However, its location on the edge of the Tasman Sea means there are also two great surfing spots - one off the North Head sand dunes and the other at Waimamauku Beach 15 minutes drive away.

Experiences

Sand dunes See more of the harbour and the Tasman Sea by catching a water taxi over to the North Head sand dunes. Explore the dunes or try your skill "surfing" or just slip sliding down the dunes on a boogie board. Pack your lunch into a picnic basket and spend the day over there - wandering among the dunes up to the sandstone formations and magnificent views or just lying in the sand soaking up the sun. You can meander along the coast, or stride out for a longer walk. Pete at Hokianga Express (water taxi) operates an efficient service every day across the harbour with the first trip at 10am and on the hour thereafter until everyone is safely back in Opononi. The boat operates from the Opononi wharf, with a reasonable return fare of $27 per adult and $17 per child for the ride to base of the dunes. Boogie boards are supplied free. Quite worth the experience of riding these slick sand dunes that meet the pristine ocean waters at the bottom.

Cellphone reception for spark/telecom is patchy in the area

Also, cellphone reception for spark/telecom is very patchy around the area, and unfortunately at the house. You able to get text messages from the deck and make calls from the curb. If you are with vodafone, the reception is good.

Eating out- not many places open late in winter

Also, cellphone reception for spark/telecom is very patchy around the house. If you are with vodafone, the reception is good. Something to be aware of is that Omapere and Opononi are tiny little towns and there are only a few places to eat. The fish and chip shop closes around 7pm and the Heads Hotel closes reasonably early too. If you arrive late, you might need to call the Hotel to book a dinner reservation (and check they will be open), or think about cooking your own dinner. There is a large Countdown in Dargaville if you are travelling that way. Opononi has a well stocked 4 Square.
