Aliso is perfect for that quick getaway into the wilderness. At the far end of the campground there is a wide, well maintained trail that wanders past hills with minimal elevation gain. Partially shaded, this trail is great for hot days. The trail is 2 miles long and at the end there is a large clearing. For a longer hike you can continue onto a trail that is located here. A little hard to find, this trail is unmarked and will bring you up to Forest Route 32S13. A second trail can also be found at the campground, although this trail is unmarked and is recommended for experienced hikers only.

Ballinger Canyon is primarily used for off highway vehicles (OHV). With an abundance of trail systems designed for 4WD, ATV, and motorcycles, this is a great place to explore the Cuyama Valley landscape on wheels. Trail access can be found at Ballinger Campground in the midst of a juniper grove. Although the primary purpose of this area is OHV, the trail systems are well maintained and make for a great day hiking and trail running. This is one of the best places to view the sunset in Cuyama with the ability to quickly get up on the ridge and see a vast majority of the Valley as the sun slips away

Carrizo Plain National Monument is best known for the super bloom that occurs after a wet winter. Those that catch it are lucky to find an isolated plain covered in yellow, orange, and purple flowers that flow over rolling hills. Stretching for 250,000 acres, Carrizo Plain has much more to offer than spectacular wild flowers. An area culturally important to Native Americans and early settlers, there is a number of historical sites scattered throughout the National Monument, accessible by car or foot. It is also home to fifteen of California’s threatened and endangered plants and animals.
