Beaches and surfing

There is the award winning beach at Woolacombe only a ten minute drive away - three miles of golden sand with surfing at the Woolacombe end - swimming with RNLI lifeguards on duty between the flags. Saunton sands is only 15 minutes away, again, with fabulous surfing - surf hire available by the car park. Croyde has another incredible beach for swimming and surfing. Surf hire and lessons available at all three locations. There's Wild Pear beach near Combe Martin for the naturists amongst you. Combe Martin has two coves - both beautiful
There's a hut on Barricane beach at Woolacombe which serves Thai curries which are to die for - and a great place to swim, so spend the day on the shell beach and watch the sunset with a fabulous curry. The beach sand is so full of shells, it's called Shell Beach by locals - washed up by the gulf stream from the Carribean - or so I'm lead to believe! There's parking all along Marine Drive all day - a walk over the dunes to the beach itself - absolutely gorgeous - when the tide comes in over the sand after a hot day, it's the perfect time for a swim. Great bars and restaurants all around too.

Some of the best surfing in the area. Beautiful beach and some really great places to eat while you're there. The Thatch pub is great. The walks along the coast are incredible - you can walk from Croyde out to Putsborough (the far end of Woolacombe beach is Putsborough) - and back in an afternoon.

Two beautiful towns - Lynton at the top and Lynmouth at the bottom of the hill - joined by the famous fernicular railway which is a pleasure in itself. In Lynton there are Galleries such as Gunns, wonderful cafes and restaurants and plenty of shops to look around. You can walk out to the Valley of the Rocks along the coast too - at sunset it is just incredible. If a cricket match is on - just perfection! Lynmouth has lovely shops, galleries, ice-cream vendors and you can walk up to Watersmeet, the National Trust cafe along the River Lyn - the East Lyn and West Lyn meet at Watersmeet itself and it has to be one of the most beautiful walks ever.

Hunters Inn is an old Victorian hunting lodge in a valley, now owned by the National Trust. As well as the visitors centre, Hunters Inn itself is a beautiful place to have lunch or dinner and watch the peacocks - gloriously situated, it is just a short - one mile - walk along the stream out to the sea at Heddon's mouth. A rocky and rather magnificent cove - the beach is often bisected by the stream so be prepared to paddle through to the other side. We've seen seals there on many occasions. There's also an old lime kiln and some rocks for a spot of climbing - don't get into difficulties though as the mobile signal there is pretty poor!

Restaurants in Ilfracombe

There are so many to choose from , but here are some favourites to suit all pockets.
John and Sharon run this fabulous bistro and bar - his food never fails to impress me and his sunday lunches are, to my mind, the best in town. Incredible value for money - not the cheapest around but if you love quality you won't be disappointed.

Yes it's a Wetherspoons - but not like you've been to before. The building itself is worth a visit - especially off season..as the fireplace on a cold winters day is really lovely. The roof terrace is one of the best places to watch the sun go down in the evening. The staff are super and the food reliable and well priced.

Ok, I'm slightly biased towards this place because my daughter works here. Really excellent seafood - fresh and prepared by a chef who really knows how to do it justice. Book ahead as it's too good an opportunity to miss - it also has the benefit of the last of the evening sun from it's terrace - sunshine, delicious food, the best waitress in Ilfracombe - really worth a visit.

They do excellent sunday lunches - all their food it great actually and they have a fabulous beer garden with a poop deck which gets sunshine all day long but the best sunset views in town. Great beer too. In addition they have music there - Sunny Sundays, afternoons in the summer and bands all year round. Usually free entry too..

Great place for coffee - or tea - or whatever, but seriously, their lunches are delicious and very good value - super friendly staff and a lovely place to watch the world go by.

If you're after a vegi cafe, look no further. If you're looking for a vegetarian menu for an evening meal they have a three course menu which is so good - but make sure you book in advance as covers are limited and it's a really popular place - as it's a byo for drinks, it makes it a really affordable treat too.

Expensive, compared to many restaurants around, but for the quality and kudos of a Michelin star chef, it has to be worth a visit. Many of my guests have visited it and loved every mouthful. I actually think the food at the Espresso is as good ....

Cinema

We have the loveliest local cinema - run by the nicest people. It is much less expensive than probably every other cinema in the country, so please support it, if the weather is rubbish. It has 3 screens -1, 2 and screen 7 - work that one out if you can!
See whatever is on on screen 7 - comfy seats and it's like a private cinema!
