My Favorite Fayetteville Area Restaurants

This place can get crazy busy during rafting/climbing season. Try to get there EARLY or late maybe. I dream about the "Hoover" sandwich - fried chicken, honey butter, greens, etc. My mouth waters as I write this. Their homemade pickles are delicious. And they usually have my favorite Michigan brew on their Beer List. Open air seating on the porch is extra nice . Restaurant is somewhat small, but a unique building, and has limited parking. Attached is their venue, "The Grove" which has live music on weekends.

This is the original. And it almost breaks my heart that there are several locations elsewhere now. But, I'm happy for them. Always consistent and never had bad service (which can be hard to come by especially during tourism season). Their Gorgonzola and Grape pizza is another meal I dream about (think "Hawaiian pizza", but soooo much better). I also love the classic Margherita pizza and their small Greek salad serves 3-5 as a side. Draft root beer is delicious. Great choices on tap and on the Beer Menu. I hear their wings are excellent, but I can't get past my favorite (nothing else like it anywhere). Family friendly with an outdoor play area. GETS CRAZY BUSY during rafting season. Try to go at off hours.

The real deal from way back. In an old church building and has a lot of character. Probably best for breakfast (served all day), but also has lunch. Coffee, desserts & known for their carrot cake. Service can be a little slow. They have a couple larger tables for a group. Family friendly. Tend to be open on days when others are closed

Tiny store front ice cream shop. Hand dipped, and my favorite place in the region for it! "Old school" small toys for sale. For seating, there are a couple of bar stools, sit outside on the bench, or walk around town on a lovely day.

Breakfast/brunch/lunch. California style, local sourced ingredients. In an older beautiful home up the hill from The Stache if you're on foot in town, or drive down a side road for parking in the back. Maybe the best burger ever. Enjoyed their chicken and waffles too. Homemade pound cake was delicious. The deck is extra nice on a sunny day.

New Brewpub with food menu. Has an artistic vibe. Good burger, locally sourced. Fish tacos were a little spicy for me, but good. Beer was excellent! Great place for atmosphere and relaxing.

They have a biergarten with a limited menu. Way off the beaten path and not far from the parking lot to Long Point Trail Head. So, it could be a nice stop before your hike, après hike, or just because Fayetteville is crazy busy. Another place I need to try. Also, a great place to rent bikes and hit the trail - on site. They also have a campground. Very "local".

More of a foody destination and a bit more upscale. Enjoyed my meal there, but haven't eaten often enough to recommend anything in particular. They also have a well stocked bar.

I like their BLTs. If you want something quick and cheaper, I recommend it with an iced tea (I prefer unsweet or 50/50). Eat in dining or a drive-thru. Right off Route 19, as you enter Fayetteville.

My Favorite Beckley Restaurants

Unique and local restaurant. Says Italian, but I prefer their Greek. The Greek grilled cheese sandwich, on homemade Zahtar flatbread is my favorite. Mmmmm. I hear they have a good Rueben and their pizza is good. I like the old school section with the old wooden boths. Décor is local. The new section is a nice sports bar - with events like karaoke, Trivia games, and occasional live music.

I spend more time here than anywhere else. It is like a Chipotle, but I prefer Qdoba. I like to get the kids' burrito bowl because everything else is too much food (unless I'm heading straight home and can put it in the fridge for the next day). Comes with chips, queso, drink. I like the quesadilla too and usually split with my Mom or husband. My "Go To" ingredients: brown rice, chicken or ground beef, 2 types of pico (one corn and one tomato), some shredded cheese or queso, sour cream and guacamole. Sometimes, we split a cookie or a brownie. Great location if you want to see a movie before or after eating.

This is a great place to go if it's raining, you're not up for something more adventurous, or you're heading back home and just want to eat a non fast food lunch before jumping on the highway. I like the fried green tomato sandwich (sans the bun) or the WV pan fried trout. It is "cafeteria" style but high quality food made by chefs trained by "The Greenbrier". They have desserts, but I prefer the hand dipped ice cream stand. There is outdoor seating in the center of this round building, an art gallery, and tons of high end hand-crafted items made only by WV artisans (pottery, baskets, glass, instruments, books, sculptures, tables, marbles, etc).

This is a fun place to go with a large group of people (i.e. you don't mind having a shrimp thrown at your face). Seriously, it's a healthy option for grilled steak, shrimp, chicken, etc, especially if you hold the teriyaki and Yum Yum Sauce. If you prefer not to sit with strangers or have your food cooked in front of you; you can always choose a regular table.

This place is an institution! Been around since the 1950's. I like the brown bean plate with hush puppies and slaw or the chip chop ham.... also the homemade cream pies (by slice or whole). Husband likes the meatloaf sandwich. I have friends that swear by the stuffed potato, King burger with homemade bun, pizza, bbq sandwich with slaw, or the milkshakes. I had a drive-in where I grew up, but not with the extensive menu as this! Where else can you get oysters, pot roast with green beans and potato, chicken livers, pizza, subs, chef salad, baby back ribs, fried chicken, mac n cheese bites, root beer float, a loaf of homemade bread, and something called a Nightmare Sandwich. That's just a start! Closed on Wed. If the car in front of you leaves, be sure to move up.

My Favorite Fayette County Activities

Ghost town with excellent Visitor's Center. Use to be a boom town. The history is interesting. The railroad tracks served as the Main Street. Can take Park Ranger led tour or explore yourself. Plenty of photo opps. Great place to see a train up close too. Amtrak station here. Hikes nearby. This was the filming location for the film, "Matewan". Take Route 25 out of Glen Jean (at US 19 & route 16), with a scenic drive along a creek. Creek runs parallel to the road... can pull over to stop for pics. A couple tiny towns along the way; drive slowly through these. Not a bad idea to bring some snacks/waters or a small cooler in case you stay awhile. Glen Jean has a gas station and Subway restaurant.

Feel adventurous? This is a guided tour of the New River Gorge Bridge from the catwalk 25’ beneath the Bridge. Attached to a safety cable, you will walk the entire 3,030' length of the bridge. Tour lasts 2-3 hours. You are shuttled to and from the bridge. I'm afraid of heights, but loved it. They even have a full moon tour. Incredible views from about 876' up.

The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve is the fourth Boy Scout of American High Adventure Base, which is in the tradition of Philmont Ranch in New Mexico, Florida Sea Base, and Northern Tier in Minnesota. This is the latest, greatest, and since 2013, the permanent location for the Boy Scouts annual Jamboree. World Jamboree takes place here this year and is the first time in North America since 1967. The Summit Bechtel Reserve will open for one day only, Saturday, June 15, for Community Appreciation Day, giving those who live in the area an opportunity to enjoy an adventure-filled day. The event will run from 1 to 5 p.m., and those who attend will be able to enjoy numerous activities, at no cost. However, the Summit is asking for a voluntary donation of $10 per car for parking, which will be donated to the Gold Star Family Veterans fund. Kenn Miller, the director of programs and operations, said activities available to the public will include zip lining, fishing, rock climbing, skateboarding, live music, BMX, mountain biking and canopy tours. Paid concessions will be available, but those who attend may also bring a picnic from home.

More Ways to Spend the Day

White Sulphur Springs and Lewisburg are about 1.25 to 1.5 hours away.
Since 1778, visitors have "taken the waters" as a curative medicine as the Native Americans had done. It is a luxury resort with 20 restaurants and lounges, 36 shops, spa, tennis (hosting Serina Williams this fall), world famous golf, swimming pool, ice skating rink, falconry, etc. They have hosted over 26 presidents, the Kennedy family, Bing Crosby, the Duke of Windsor with Wallace Simpson, and Princess Grace of Monaco. They become a hospital during the Civil War, and again for WWII. In the late 1950s, the U.S. government approached The Greenbrier to be the site of a massive underground bunker that was meant to serve as an emergency shelter for the United States Congress during the Cold War (in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust). After a Washington Post reporter broke the story in 1992, the Bunker was decommissioned and you can now tour it. The Greenbrier also hosts The Greenbrier Classic for the PGA tour and has had Sam Sneed, Tom Watson, and now Lee Trevino as golf pro emeritus. Their medical and sports facilities have also hosted the New Orleans Saints and The Houston Texans spring training camps.

Lewisburg is a quaint little Civil War village. There are historical landmarks to check out, boutiques, unique restaurants, art, pubs, etc. They also have 1 of 4 Carnegie Halls that hosts a "music on the lawn" summer series. Nearby, there are caves for exploring, breweries, distilleries, scenic drives, etc.
