What CentralFestival has in height, Royal Garden Plaza has in width. Stretching out along the southern end of Beach Road, it is a distinctive landmark for the bright red aircraft stuck out of the Second Road entrance and the yellow balloon rising out of the roof, both of which belong to the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum which takes up most of an entire floor. The remaining three floors, however, are the home of an array of high street brands including Levi’s, Esprit, Von Dutch and Converse. There is also an impressive range of souvenirs, jewellery, beachwear, electrical goods and dining options.

While the selection of local and international brands on offer in Outlet Mall Pattaya is impressive, the huge savings available are even more so. Up to 70 per cent has been known to be knocked off the prices of original products from Levi, Camel Active, Adidas, Nike, Timberland, Warner Bros. Studio and Lacoste, amongst others. The downstairs Premium Fashion Mall features a recreation of a street market layout, but with names like Clarks, Samsonite, Speedo and Crocs on sale. Amongst the few on-site eating options is one of the finest low-cost, high-quality Thai restaurants in Pattaya.

Mike Shopping Mall combines the air-conditioned environment of big shopping malls with the excellent prices of street markets. It has a selection of smaller brand stores such as Maybelline, Nike and Pierre Cardin, but these are vastly outnumbered by the vendors selling unbranded or copied clothing. It is also a great place to go looking for souvenirs and has a selection of cheap local dining options in and around it. Uniquely amongst the shopping options in Pattaya, it has a rooftop pool which is available for public use for a small fee.

One of the biggest and certainly amongst the most popular of the local markets, it attracts tourists and locals alike each weekend. Sometimes known as “Kankheha Thepprasit Market”, it is home to an impressive range of clothes, jewellery, mobile phone accessories, make-up, toys, gadgets, souvenirs and Thai cuisine. As is to be expected of a street market, most of the wares are cheap copies, particularly the CDs and DVDs, but there are still some excellent bargains to be found on surprisingly good non-branded items, particularly if you haggle the prices down a bit.

What was once a rag-tag collection of street stalls under a stifling corrugated metal roof is now an air-conditioned edifice containing a good selection of stalls selling wares ideal for tourists. Also known as the “Made in Thailand Market”, the vendors within sell everything from discount clothing and souvenirs to mobile phone accessories and small electrical gadgets – basically, everything you would normally find in a street market, with a few bonus extras like tailor shops and luggage stalls. The prices are perhaps few baht higher than you would expect to pay at one of the street markets, but paying for wider paths between stalls and a constant flow of cool air is well worth it.

t in Paradise takes the traditional assumptions of what an art gallery should be and completely ignores them. Instead, the art is brought to life and the visitors can become part of it through the use of optical illusions and playing with perspective. Stand in the right position and take a picture from the right angle – all of which are clearly marked out for you – and it looks like you are flying a magic carpet in the desert, crossing a rickety bridge in the jungle, swimming with dolphins in the ocean or putting the finishing touches to famous masterpieces.

Pattaya’s pink-neon-lit beer bars are renowned for being a little on the seedy side, but it does depend a lot on the area you go to. While not exactly family-friendly, Soi 7 (between Pattaya Beach Road and Second Road) is more about having a good time and a few drinks. The beverages here are far cheaper than they are around Walking Street, with a local beer being as little as 65 baht and a shot of local whiskey being even less, in select bars. Because of this, the street is particularly popular with budget travellers, locals and young expatriates.

Soi Buakhao is increasingly known as the new Walking Street. Running all the way from Pattaya Klang to Pattaya South Road, the narrow road is somewhat less family-friendly than its more famous predecessor – which is saying something. It attracts an older audience, so has fewer high energy night clubs. Instead, it has more beer bars, ladyboy bars and go-go bars than anywhere else in the city. Notable off-shoots include Action Street (where every single bar is a ladyboy bar) and Soi LK Metro (where the same can nearly be said about go-go bars, but there are also a few highly-regarded sports bars).

If told to imagine a cerulean blue sea and a long stretch of pristine beach void of high-rise buildings and away from the claws of civilization, Pattaya would probably be the last place to conjure up in your mind’s eye. Well, that would be the case until you’ve discovered Koh Larn (Larn Island), a little piece of paradise beyond the hustle and bustle of Pattaya… Also known as Coral Island, Koh Larn – situated 7.5 kilometres west of Pattaya Beach – has long been an alternative retreat for those who have become jaded with Pattaya’s overdeveloped and overcrowded beaches. Since the island is not so far away, visitors can easily go there in the morning, stay for a couple of hours and then come back to Pattaya Beach late afternoon.

While Bali Hai Pier and the area around it has a host of activities such as fishing and diving trips, it is as a gateway to Koh Larn which is its real attraction. The largest and most popular of Pattaya’s nearby islands, “Coral Island” has several of the white sandy beaches its name suggests, which are ideal for relaxing on, swimming or snorkelling off or walking between across the island’s hilly interior. A regular passenger ferry runs between the pier and the island every 30 minutes and takes about as long to get there while a chartered speedboat can do the same trip in about ten minutes. The fare for the ferry is very cheap, however, while the speedboat can cost over 1,500 baht. The pier is also the only way to access the floating restuarants in Pattaya Bay.

Visible glittering in the sunlight from a distance, the image of Buddha carved into the side of a limestone hill and inlaid with gold has an appropriate name which translates as “the Buddha with brightness and sublimity”. Etched out of the side of what was once a source for construction materials with a laser, it is 130 metres in height and 70 metres at its widest point, making it is the largest carved stone Buddha in the world. The area it resides in – commonly known as Silverlake – is one of great natural beauty and is also home to a number of other attractions such as the Silverlake Vineyard.

Underwater World is a great way to see the remarkable sea life which resides in the waters around Pattaya, particularly if you are not a scuba diver (and even if you are and aren’t keen on Pattaya’s less-than-ideal underwater visibility). The 100-metre acrylic tunnel gives a unique perspective on more than 200 species of water-dwellers, including sharks, stingrays, sea otters and turtles. The live feeding shows are particularly popular, as is the option to don a wetsuit and swim with the residents or get a feel for them in the touch pool.

There can be few sights in Pattaya quite as bizarre as a two-metre-tall realistic model of a Tyrannosaurus Rex being cuddled by three teddy bears dressed as cavemen. A curious combination of adorable and baffling, the Teddy Bear Museum (also known as Teddy Island) contains about 1,000 stuffed animals, ranging in size from little Christmas helpers no bigger than your hand to a three-metre-long giant panda. The family-friendly indoor exhibition takes the form of a journey through history and fantasy, entirely acted out by cuddly toys. The majority of the dioramas can be at least touched, if not interacted with, making it extremely popular with younger children.

The Hilton Pattaya building dominates the city’s skyline, being easily the tallest building on Pattaya Beach Road, if not the tallest in the whole area. Right at the top – on the 34th floor – is the Horizon Bar – presumably so named because it’s so far up that you can see the curvature of the Earth from the balcony. The very best place to enjoy a drink with a view.

The Hard Rock franchise is well-known the world over for its quirky style and great music. From the iconic giant guitar head and “no drugs or nuclear weapons allowed inside” neon sign over the door to the collection of music and movie memorabilia inside, it certainly has the style. The music starts every evening at 18:00 on the Sun & Moon deck, which looks out over Beach Road. The house band starts up at 21:30 and plays into the early hours. The excellent rock groups are frequently rotated, with special guest bands also making regular appearances. The attached Hard Rock Hotel also hosts some of the best foam parties in the region, the Miss Hard Rock beauty contest and the annual guitar festival.

Watch the sunset by the infinity pool on the 25th floor – which has also hosted some of the city’s best pool parties – before dropping down a floor to The Roof Sky Bar & Restaurant, which has a seaside garden feel and down-tempo beats as the night draws in. If you prefer an indie electro vibe, go down to the quirky Car Bar on the ground floor, with its street chic style, bike chains for coasters and an impressive selection of unique cocktails.

Located at the entrance to Walking Street, Pattaya Beer Garden is, for many, a relaxed way to ease yourself into a night at the clubs with a few quiet drinks or a cheap meal. However, its great view across the bay and mix of rock and pop music makes this an extremely popular venue in its own right. Although not strictly part of the Beer Garden, the complex of pink neon-lit beer bars you have to walk past to reach it are equally popular and fun, but with an extra dose of excitement because of the live Muay Thai boxing fights held right in the centre. The fights are exhibition bouts only so it doesn’t have the same excitement as a real prize fight but it’s still a fun spectacle.
