The menu here is very fresh Tex-Mex. Happy hour is 3-6:00 and it’s easy to make a meal out of the tapas. They have some great outdoor spaces that overlook the San Gabriel River, both for the bar and for the restaurant.

This is the go-to breakfast spot in town. They have terrific house-made jams and jellies, so when they give you a choice, ask for a sampling. We recommend the hash or their classic southern biscuits and gravy. If you’re there for lunch, be sure to save room for dessert because they are known for their pies.

We lived in this cute little house at 309 S. Main Street for a year while our home was being built and after we moved out, the owners turned it into a coffee shop, but it’s much more than that. It’s open until 10:00 PM Mon-Sat (they close at 4:00 on Sundays), and besides coffee, tea and lattes, they also serve wine and beer. You can sit on the front porch, on the side deck or in the back yard, shaded by a huge pecan tree. The inside space is delightful, too, with plenty of places to plug in. I’m addicted to the chai latte with oat milk. It’s located across the street from the old jail (built in 1880) and a few blocks from the path that goes to the Blue Hole or to San Gabriel Park.

We’ve never had a bad meal at Blue Corn Harvest. They describe their food as “authentic Southwestern cuisine”, but the menu is quite varied with great fish dishes as well as a tasty pulled pork sandwich and one of their specialties, blue crab stuffed chicken. They also have interesting cocktails, many of which are made with Texas spirits. If it’s a Friday or Saturday night, there is often a wait, so you might want to call ahead and make a reservation. 512-819-6018

This place has terrific brick oven pizzas and lots of housemade combos, or of course you can design your own pizza. They also have a wide variety of beers on tap. It's often crowded and the inside seating area is loud but you can order ahead and pick up your pizza or try to get a seat on the outdoor patio area.

This is our "special occasion" place where we've celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and even New Year's Eve a couple of times. They have an extensive wine and cocktail list and the menu ranges from steak and seafood to elk and ostrich dishes. It's our special occasion place because it's the priciest place on the square, but definitely a more upscale dining experience.

Sweet Lemon is a terrific breakfast and lunch spot just a block off the Georgetown square. They also serve dinner on Friday and Saturday and often have live music on the lawn next to the building. The menu is mostly salads and sandwiches and they have great paninis and wonderful baked goods. Hot tip: ask to be seated on the front porch.

Rentsch Brewery is definitely "off the beaten path" but if you venture a bit away from the downtown area, you'll be treated to a lovely outdoor area (very shady and comfortable even on hot days) and some good local brews. They don't serve food at the brewery, but check their website to see which food truck will be parked there. They usually have a barbecue food truck on the weekends and a series of other fares throughout the week.

Food scene

This is a relatively new restaurant and they are just starting to expand the area around the Sheraton Hotel on the west side of I-35 with shops and places to eat. Market Scratch Kitchen has great appetizers that could be shared around the table for the meal or try one of their oversized burgers with sweet potato fries. It can be a little loud when it's busy but definitely worth checking out.

If you're into sushi, Ichiro is the place to go. This Asian fusion restaurant is a little pricey, but the food is excellent and they have live jazz most Wednesdays and Saturdays.
