I think Blue Mosque is not the best Mosque of Istanbul but it is ideally located and does worth a visit. It is famous with the blue Turkish tiles in and the 6 minarets.

Hagia Sophia is the best example of the converted churches. The minarets suit the main building a lot and inside you can have atmosphere of both a Mosque and a Church. It is 1500 years old but still strong enough despite lots of earthquakes and fires.

The most important Ottoman Palace. It contains the harem, Palaces and the treasury. In the treasury there are lots of unique pieces. Such as the big diamond, walking stick of Prophet Moses, the sword of Prophet David and lots of other great items. When you finish with all these please go to the end of it and enjoy the great view of the phosphorus. There is a a cafe and restaurant to sit and enjoy the peace and the view.

A kind of open air museum with some monuments. The very centre of the city and old town where all the museums are around. It used to be a hippodrome during Byzantine time and still called hippodrome by some people. It is closed for traffic so you can walk it all.

In todays world the shopping centres become popular in the last 50 years but this Bazaar was built as a shopping mall more than 500 years ago by Ottoman Empire. There are around 5000 shops in it. Actually almost everyone sells the same things but still so many things. The sales persons are not very serious there but still i think it is the best place for souvenirs and jewelry.

This monument is my second masterpiece said Sinan, the greatest architect of Ottoman Empire. It is the best Mosque of Istanbul. An incredibly clever architecture. It is like 10 minutes from the Grand Bazaar. There is a good view of Bosphorus from its garden and You can have great photos from there. The neighbourhood worth a visit too. It is an old Ottoman neighbourhood with typical wooden houses.

The Egyptian Bazaar used to be called as the “New Bazaar” and “Valide Bazaar” by the historiographers of the 17th century. However it later earned reputation in mid-18th century with the name of “Egyptian Bazaar” as the spices and goods that were sold in the bazaar were mostly coming from Egypt. More commonly used compared to others, the name of “Egyptian Bazaar” is also read in the travel books of foreign travelers in referring to the structure. In Constantinople by Edmondo de Amicis dated 1874, the Egyptian Bazaar is described as follows: “Entering this, we are immediately assailed by an odour so powerful as to fairly knock one down: this is the Egyptian Bazaar, where are deposited all the wares of India, Syria, Egypt, and Arabia, which later on, converted into essences, pastilles, powders and ointments, serve to colour little hands and faces, perfume apartments and baths and breaths and beards, reinvigorate worn-out pashas, and dull the senses of unhappy married people, stupefy smokers, and spread dreams, oblivion, and insensibility throughout the whole of the vast city. After going but a short distance in this bazaar your head begins to feel dull and heavy, and you get out of it as fast as you can; but the effect of that hot, close atmosphere and those penetrating odors clings long to your clothing, and remains for all time in your memory as one of the most vivid and characteristic impressions of the East.” The Egyptian Bazaar was allocated between herbalists and cotton dealers when it was first constructed. 3 (Fish Bazaar, Mat and Linen Dealers) of the 6 gates were allocated to herbalists; and the rest (New Mosque, Haseki and Flower Market) to the cotton dealers. During that period, while 49 out of almost 100 stores were occupied by the herbalists; the rest by the cotton dealers and quilt makers. The names of the gates have changed in time as follows: Eminönü Gate / Yeni Cami Gate, Balık Pazarı Gate / Tahmis Gate / Hasırcılar Gate, Ketenciler Gate / Tahtakale Gate, Çiçek Pazarı Gate and Bahçe Gate. The master gates on both edges of the Egyptian Bazaar had been elevated on purpose to give impression in architectural terms. While the upper floors of the bazaar were used as Commercial Courts it is a known fact that in either of the edges there used to be Muslim judges handling the conflicts between tradesmen themselves and the public and tradesmen.

Galata tower. The tower where Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi (a genius, the first ever flying human) flew from by the wings he made to Üsküdar. Now it is a museum where you can have a panoramic view of Istanbul. Generally there is a line in front longer than its length but it worth waiting and seeing it. The tower was built in the 14th century by the Genoese who had semi-independence from the Byzantines. It was part of their fortification. The tower was used as a prison and a fire tower during the Ottoman era. The nine-story tower is 66.90 meters tall and was the city’s tallest structure when it was built. The elevation at ground level is 35 meters above sea-level. According to Evliya Çelebi, Ottoman historian and traveller, Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi flew as an early aviator using artificial wings from the tower to Üsküdar. The Sultan at the time initially taught of rewarding him, then changed his mind and sent him to exile in Algeria. Today the observatory deck has a 360 degrees view of the city, from here you can observe the monuments that sit on the seven hills of historical peninsula. (Constantinople was built on the seven hills of the historical peninsula like Rome.)

An oasis in the middle of the crowd. This wonderful place was built by great Sinan as a Medrese. Medrese was a school where teenagers were educated during Ottoman Empire time. Today is an art gallery, art school and cafe. Today In the classes where teenagers were having lessons, they teach typical Turkish handicrafts and arts. Such as Ceramic art, Ebru art and painting. Go there when you want to have peace, quietness and you want to drink a good Turkish coffee.

The only Palace on the Asian side of Istanbul. It has a very nice garden by the sea. It was ordered by Sultan Abdulaziz as a summer house and first he used it. Then it used as summer house by other Sultans and they hosted here the foreign Kings as well when they visited Istanbul. This Palace has another memory which makes me sad anytime i go there. The ll Abdulhamid the great hakan was prisoned there in his last years and he died there.
