Sightseeing

Batu Caves, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most frequented tourist attractions, is a limestone hill comprising three major caves and a number of smaller ones. Located approximately 11 kilometres to the north of Kuala Lumpur, this 100-year-old temple features idols and statues erected inside the main caves and around it. Incorporated with interior limestone formations said to be around 400 million years old, the temple is considered an important religious landmark by Hindus.

Museum

The Islamic Arts Museum is excellent and very accessible for non-Muslims who speak either Malay or English.. The collections are well set out, including by nationality. I found the Malaysian section of particular interest, but there were also good sections on Chinese and Indian Muslims. The museum shop is full of quality items and well worth a visit. You can spent a good 2-3 hours here. It is then an easy 15 min walk to the Botanic Gardens afterwards.

Neighborhoods

If you hate crowded spaces, being hassled by vendors and opposed to a bit of bartering then this place is not for you. Petaling St is the heart of Kuala Lumpa's China Town district and forms the backdrop to a vibrant night scene with an eclectic mix of stalls and street food venues. You can buy anything here and if you fancy a designer label (the quality does vary) then you can barter to your hearts content. There are literally hundreds of stalls and the area gets busier as the day goes on. The vendors put in some hours as the market is open for about 12 hours each day.

Food scene

Hosting a lot of hawker stalls and seafood restaurants, Jalan Alor is one of the most famous roads in Kuala Lumpur for food. Located just behind Jalan Bukit Bintang and a short walk away from Changkat Bukit Bintang. Though the seafood at the air-conditioned restaurants is really good and inexpensive, I highly recommend the hawker food. KL being an immigrant city, the variety of food available is amazing and in Jalan Alor the barbecued meats, noodles and desserts are some of the best. Most of these dishes cannot be found in fashion-conscious restaurants – and even if they are, they are rarely as tasty, so hawker stalls are a favourite on the city’s foodie scene.

Be careful at night with handbags that include valuables

It's not uncommon for women to have their handbag with valuables stolen by robbers on motorbikes. Often at night but also during the day. Don't bring too many valuables.
