Here are some suggestions about villages, sites you may like to visite and activities to be performed. Unless differently specified you should drive no farther than 40-sixty minutes to reachthese places .
A huge landslide destroyed this village in 1950. Only the medieval castle resisted the landslip. Now the Castle towers over a phantom village, and evocates historical events among suggestive views and panoramas. It is possible to visit the site with guided assistance and look at many exhibitions and performances. This village history was described by Sergio Rubino - a well known Italian actor and director - in his movie ìI bene mio. film di Sergio Rubino "Il bene mio".

This visit demands one entire day, however it is worth. Policoro is the access way to the Ionio sea. You can reach in about an hour driving to the Basentana road from San Mauro. When there you have multiple choices. You can stay there and visit the Herakleya archeological site and museum, the ancient feudal manor (where you can eat cheap and well), have a swimm (april/November) or visit the Rocca di papa Fredrik II castle. In alternative you can do oen only of these thing and follow up to visit the Tavole Palatine (10 km); the great greek museum in Metaponto. with its very interesting show about Pitagora and maths and, if you are not done yet, reach Taranto. You can be back for the late evening.

One of the higher trees is chosen and 'sacrificed' for the feast. However even if it is not May the village merits a visit. First, it is on the road of the Gallipoli Nationa Park, where you can visit the middle of Dolomiti lucane. Second, it owns a nice, histocal village center. Third and most important, you cannot miss to eat at "Taverna Pezzolla". This is a small restaurant where in small company and in a suggestive atmosphere you can enjoy a savoury dinner or lunch. Everything is prepared with original local recipes and materials; everything is first quality and respects local tradition but is creatively cooked.

There aer no particular tour advantages, I suggest this sites because the local council allows any stranger to stay here for one year and provides them with Italian passport, residence and cheap accomodation at codition they live in the village for that year and attend one amonng the many courses inmany craftmanships. These are not only oriented in local activities. There are courses in photography, art restoration and the like. Ideal for refugees and/or retired people who wants to learn something new. I would apply to learn dancing Tango. However there is no such course.

Sightseeing
A view is not only about seeing. What is important is the emotion that you feel and the thoughts it raises. When looking to The Basento River from the Spartan fortress 400 mt. over it, you may remember that you were Epaminonda, in a precedent life.
Pietra Pertosa (encarved rock) lies high in the Dolomiti lucane, about 300 meters below an ancient Greek fortress. The fortress allowed the possessor to dominate the course of the Basento River from the source to the mouth: the fortress of Herakleya (Policoro) and the city of Metaponto.
There are many stairs to climb in Pietra pertosa, to begin from the 300 mt flight of steps to the fortress. However it is worth to feel the feelings of Alkibyades when looking to the river from the top of the fortress. The town was a very important religious centre and ihere are many churchs ad convents dating from 1300 to 1600. Otherwise you can experiment a flight of two miles from 1120 mt to the ground, attached to a wheel pending from a steel cable.
