The Sabie Waterfalls Route – Cinderella to the Blyde River Canyon and its incredible cliffs and views - is well worth taking time to do. And Mac Mac Falls is one of them. There are actually more waterfalls around Sabie than anywhere else in southern Africa. Regarded as the most stunning of the lot, Mac Mac has twin falls that plunge some 70m into a gorge below. Now a national monument, the waterfall was not always split in two. Gold miners in the area for the gold rush blasted the originally single stream to try and reach the gold-bearing reef over which it drops. Mac Mac tends to revert to one fall during the dry season. You will find the waterfall roughly 13km outside of Sabie on R532 on both the Sabie Waterfalls Route and the Escarpment Route. A viewing platform, which allows really good views of the falls, is a little restricted by a wire safety mesh but you should just get your camera lens through the holes, depending on the camera. There are also a series of pools at Mac Mac falls - great for swimming - and a braai and picnic area, so timing your visit for lunch time and an afternoon swim is not a bad idea. A 3km Secretary Bird Trail takes you through the bush in which, if you are lucky and quiet, you will hear the calls of the robin, thrush, cuckoo, greenbul and even the odd Secretary bird. Best time to see the falls, say visitors, is during summer when the falls are full and the surrounds green and lush.

Picnic Spot and Swimming
This is Mpumalanga's best-hidden gem. Some people have tried finding it, with no luck. It is situated between Graskop and Sabie and takes you on a walk through the forest before laying your eyes on it. The walk is approximately 7 km long, and you can leave your car at a picnic spot (cars are not allowed to drive in the forests). Allow at least 2 hours for the out and back walk.

These falls are found 4 km off the Old Lydenburg Road, signposted on the left side. A short walk through the beautiful terrain affords one the opportunity to spot magnificent bird-life and other wildlife. The trail soon leads to the cascade type falls. The Horseshoe Falls was aptly named so as it is in the shape of a horseshoe and is an exquisite sight. Not surprisingly then, the Horseshoe Falls have a circular appearance, and although the falls are not very high, they are very unusual. The Horseshoe Falls have been declared a national monument and are a must see along the route
