Traditional Irish Music
Thursday night traditional music sessions going on for over 50 years.....
Owner Emma O’Brien reckons the session at Clancy’s “is unique as it’s the longest running traditional music session in Ireland.” In fact, 2016 saw Clancy’s celebrate its 50th year of trad sessions. The pub has even created a free traditional music festival called TradAthy, which is held during the May bank holiday weekend.
But it’s the Thursday night gatherings of the traditional musicians in Clancy's back room that has given the pub its unique position in Irish music circles. Visitors come away really impressed at the quality of the music played there, according to Emma. Their session is open to everybody – singers and storytellers included.
“Clancy’s is simply about the ceol agus craic (music and fun), meeting new people and playing some tunes,” according to Seamus Byrne, the longest member of Clancy’s session.
Visitor Brian Faye says, “Clancy’s music session is like a family to me. I’m from the Isle of Wight and visit the session regularly. The atmosphere and wellbeing of the people make me feel at home.”
The Athy pub has had its fair share of famous performers, too: Francie Conway from The Fureys, musician Mickey Joe Harte, singer Eleanor Shanley, Frankie Lane from the original Fleadh Cowboys, actor John Hurt and former Planxty members and trad superstars – Liam O’Flynn and Donal Lunny.
Flooded with legendary singers and a session that’s still going strong, maybe it’s time to head to Clancy’s?

Sha-Roe is quite simply a treasure of gastronomy, nestled in the picturesque village of Clonegal, Co. Carlow. The multi-award winning bistro continues to wow visitors with its simple and elegant approach to food.
Henry Stone and his Swiss wife, Stephanie Barrillier met while working in Marlfield House in Gorey, where Henry’s reputation as head chef was a major draw. In 2002 Henry was awarded a 3 AA Rosette whilst working there. While looking for a venue for their new restaurant idea, the newly-married couple spotted the 18th Century house in Clonegal in January 2005. They spent the summer of that year renovating it into Sha-Roe Bistro, which opened in September.
In 2007 they won The Georgina Campbell ‘Best Newcomer of the Year’. The award was based on the amazing food & wine experience, Stephanie’s front of house charm, as well as the immaculate setting of the beautifully restored restaurant.

Mullaghreelan Wood is a picturesque old woodland estate that offers the visitor a very unique forest experience. The wood adjoins Kilkea castle, which was built in 1180 AD by Hugh de Lacey for Walter de Riddlesford after the invasion of Ireland by Strongbow. Kilkea was also the birthplace of St. Laurence O” Toole who was Archbishop of Dublin in the 12th century. His heart is preserved in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin.
The wood encircles a hill top rath which overlooks Kilkea castle and offers excellent views westward over the rolling landscape of east Laois. The rath probably precedes the castle and was the site of the discovery of a Middle.

One very unmistakable monument dating back to pre-historical times is the great Brownshill Dolmen the east of Carlow town. Brownshill Dolmen has a granite capstone weighing over 100 tonnes, making it the largest of its kind in Europe. The massive capstone rests on two portal stones which flank a door stone and slopes downwards to the west where it rests on a low boulder.
The magnificent capstone has excited the interest of many antiquarians and tourists down through the years and it is thought that religious rites, possibly even human sacrifice, were performed there for four and a half thousand years (2500 BC) Signposted, direct access at 5km from Carlow town on the R726 Hacketstown Road.

Timahoe Heritage Centre situated in Timahoe is dedicated to showcasing the Monastic heritage of the Village. The centre is full of local heritage and information on the 12th century Round Tower on site. There is also a playground nearby and a coffee shop.

A bit of a hidden gem - hard to believe you are so close to town and yet the walk through the woods and around the lake makes you feel you are far away from busy roads. Takes less then an hour to walk the loop.

Local Walking Trails
Immediately outside the accommodation there is a Blueway trail that goes to Athy (and beyond) to the left of the bridge as you exit the property. To the right the trail goes to Carlow and on down to Graiguenamanagh. To Athy is approximately one hour with beautiful scenery all the way. There are a couple of old historic bridges, one in particiular (the high bridge) has rope marks gouged into its corners from the frequent horse drawn barges that travelled to and from the mill to Guniness breweries in Dublin. Some more bridges, a weir and the lock gates at Ardreigh are notable landmarks.

The Barrow Way
The judges of the Irish Times Best Day Out in Ireland competition 2015 selected the Barrow Way as one of the top five finest and impressive visitor attractions in the country.
The Barrow Way follows the towpath, originally a patch alongside the River Barrow where horses pulled barges and goods for transport. Nowadays, visitors can enjoy excellent flat walking, passing good land where tillage and cattle farming is predominant. The path offers much of architectural interest to the visitor. The Stable is located on stage 3 of the route, 8km from Athy and 11km from Carlow.

Appropriate footwear
If you plan to walk any of the nearby trails is is good to gave appropriate foorwear. In winter much of the grass tracks can be a bit muddy, so wellingtons or high waterproof boots are key. We have an outside tap at the entrance to the Stable for washing up after!
