Superb baked goods, friendly service and a great atmosphere. De Bakkerswinkel is a great place to have brunch. I love their cheesecake, and they serve their scones properly, with clotted cream and artisanal jam. Yummy!!

Beautiful square around the corner from the house, great place for a cocktail in the afternoon when the sun's shining, with a view of the Waag, a medieval gateway into the city where merchants had their goods weighed for taxing before they entered Amsterdam. Each of the towers represents a different guild, and the restaurant is pretty good too

Sightseeing
This church is an absolute must-see. Stripped of its most of gaudy paint during the protestant reformation, it's a sanctuary of quiet in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the red-light district. Make sure you actually open the paper guide they give you at the door. It's full of interesting facts and it's very cleverly written. Look for the face of the painter in the faux marble to the left of the main door ;-)

For a unique view of Amsterdam from the water, hop on the NDSM ferry behind central station. It's completely free and it takes you past some spectacular new buildings along Amsterdam's Western waterfront, including the new Palace of Justice. At the end of the ride, which takes roughly 20 minutes, visit the pier, where you'll find the "Botel" (the letters on top are hotel suites) and the Veronica ship, which sailed the North see from 1960 to 1974 as a pirate radio station. Stop in at the restaurant at the foot of the pier for lunch !

NDSM-PleinFor a unique view of Amsterdam from the water, hop on the NDSM ferry behind central station. It's completely free and it takes you past some spectacular new buildings along Amsterdam's Western waterfront, including the new Palace of Justice. At the end of the ride, which takes roughly 20 minutes, visit the pier, where you'll find the "Botel" (the letters on top are hotel suites) and the Veronica ship, which sailed the North see from 1960 to 1974 as a pirate radio station. The building, a jewel of the Amsterdam School of architecture, is adorned with terra cotta sculptures of famous Dutch explorers and captains. The roof-top is a stylised sea-scape. I never get tired of gazing across my canal at this incredible building !

The building, a jewel of the Amsterdam School of architecture, is adorned with terra cotta sculptures of famous Dutch explorers and captains. The roof-top is a stylised sea-scape. I never get tired of gazing across my canal at this incredible building !
The cafe/restaurant in the Beurs van Berlage is really incredibly beautiful. The building, formerly a stock exchange, was designed by one of the great Dutch architects of the early 20th century, Hendrik Petrus Berlage, and is in the list of the 1000 most important buildings of the Union Internationale des Architectes. Have coffee here after wandering around the neighborhood surrounded by gorgeous tile tableaux representing the past, the present and the future by Jan Toorop.. There are changing exhibitions and concerts in the stock exchange halls, well worth a visit !!

The building, formerly a stock exchange, was designed by one of the great Dutch architects of the early 20th century, Hendrik Petrus Berlage, and is in the list of the 1000 most important buildings of the Union Internationale des Architectes. Have coffee here after wandering around the neighborhood surrounded by gorgeous tile tableaux representing the past, the present and the future by Jan Toorop.. There are changing exhibitions and concerts in the stock exchange halls, well worth a visit !!

The Hollandsche Manege (riding school in simple English) is the oldest riding school in the Netherlands. Built in 1881 to serve the elite in the surrounding area, the building is a mix of baroque and classical elements and cast iron, a novelty when the building was constructed. The architect, Adolf van Gendt, was a true eclectic, mixing and matching styles and materials to suit the assignment, but he took his primary inspiration here from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. The cafe has a view of the indoor dressage hall, you can visit the horses in their stalls, and walk, run, cycle or skate (hire available in the summer) through the nearby Vondel Park, where you'll run into an original Picasso if you keep your eyes peeled!
