Great walks

The top peak in the Brecon Beacons. A must for every visitor that wants to experience the mountain with this rewarding walk. The link is for a circular walk that cover also Corn Ddu, the second peak. We have done it a few times and it never failed to amaze. We have also seen a jet fighter flying between the two peaks at low altitude - a scary but incredible experience. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/brecon-beacons/trails/pen-y-fan-and-corn-du-circular-walk

Great walk, not too difficult with lovely views 360 degrees on the lake and the main peaks of the Beacons. It is the seat of an iron age hill fort. Easy to start from the Barn around the lake and up, or drive to Llangasty village hall for a short and sharp walk to the top. There is also a starting point from a layby on the A40 between Bwlch and Talybont-on-Usk.

Favourite local walk on the hills above Llangorse. Don't miss the wild ponies! Favourite local walk on the hills above Llangorse. Don't miss the wild ponies! You can walk from the barn: turn left and then left again at the "grass triangle", then up all the way, it is not short. You can also drive to the bottom of it Cockit hill; 10 minutes along a narrow country road and some parking available. From there you can walk the last stretch (20 -30 minutes) which is quite steep but you'll be rewarded with fantastic views of the lake and the Beacons in front of it. From Cockit Hill you can also takle Myndd Troeed, a distinctive hill of the Black Mountains towering Llangorse.

Fantastic walk - not to be missed. It is possible to drive close to the top of the mountain, from Talybont-on-Usk, there is some parking space at the end of the narrow country road. From there you can walk straight up to Tor-y-Foel, or walk around it for a more gentle ascent and drop down back to the car park. The top of the mountain affords 360 views of the whole of Mid Wales. Try to spot the Mon&Brec Canal, Brecon and other interesting points. Also great views of Talybont reservoir.

A peak in the beacons that offers fantastic views, on the top of the Roman Road and the Gap Road. A medium level walk that can start from the Forestry Commission car park (grid ref. SO038169). It is also part of the "Horse Shoe", a challenging ridge circular walk that takes in all the main peaks.

It is Welsh for 'great peak'; a great walk to take in some of the reservoirs along the A470. It can start from Storey Arms and is on "the other side" of Pen y Fan.

Sightseeing

The lake is nested between the Central Beacons and the Black Mountains, is the largest natural lake in Wales, Llangorse Lake. Like the mountain lakes, it lies in a hollow formed by glacial action, but at 154m above sea level, it’s far more accessible. https://www.breconbeacons.org/things-to-do/attractions/natural/llangorse-lake

The evocative ruins of a gothic church in the middle of a secluded valley. Amazing spot, fantastic walks and views. There is also a pub! From CADW "Remote Llanthony, locked away in a dramatic location in the Vale of Ewyas beneath the brooding borderland Black Mountains that rise abruptly from this evocative ruin, still radiates that spirit of isolation and contemplation."

One of the gems along the River Wye, Hay-on-Wye is the small town famous the world over for books. With the river flowing gracefully along its north western edge Hay, as we locals refer to it, abuts the England Wales border. Its reputation as a town packed with bookshops and as the venue for the annual Festival of Literature are only two of its many facets. Y Gelli Gandryll (the shattered grove) as it is known in Welsh, is the ideal base for exploring the northern Black Mountains. Come and discover its many quirky delights.
