San Antonio is rich with history and culture. Not only can you visit the Alamo and the Riverwalk but please visit Mission Concepción, Mission Espada, Mission San Juan in Mission San Jose. These missions aren’t quite as popular as the Alamo but they’re more beautiful And less crowded!

UNESCO World Heritage Site San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a must see. Don't just settle for the Alamo but also see Mission San Juan, Mission Concepcion, Mission Espada and Mission San Jose. The Museum, or library as it was originally known, now houses mill memorabilia including antique baking accessories, cookie cutters and anniversary Dresden china plates which were given to customers by the mill. After World War II, Dresden plates were replaced with American-made china until they also stopped in 1952. The restaurant encompasses the original kitchen, tea room, dining room and the outdoor arbor areas of the Guenther House. Don't leave San Antonio without having brunch at The Guenther House.

Food scene

There are so many great restaurants in San Antonio and I've chosen a few that don't land on the tourist radar. I've been traveling for over 30 years and one thing I love to do is avoid the tourist scene. Medina's and My Little Taco house are filled with local residents and delicious food. I eat there exactly for that a reason. You don't find locals at hotels! Enjoy!
My daughter and I shared this pizza and it was plenty. Homemade pizza with oranges, ricotta, red onion, pistachios baked in their own brick oven! The dough is made on site. This is a must do! You can't leave Southtown without eating at Il Forno for homemade pizza in a brick oven. They even grow their own veggies in front.

Ok their refried beans are Aaaamazing! I might get in trouble for this but I beg you to stay off the Riverwalk (momentarily) for so-so traditional Tex-Mex! LOL. Instead make your way to Medina’s locally owned restaurant for the best and cheapest Mexican food around! About 5 blocks from our home. As a seasoned traveler I always recommend that travelers walk out their front door and walk 3 to 4 blocks in any direction and see what you find before you head to any tourist location!

The weekends are always full of live music. The Mexican food is killer, and the margaritas give you plenty of fuel to keep moving. Rosario’s is packed on first Fridays, but is well worth the wait and the crowd. And there’s no cover charge! AYE!

Kunstler is walking distance from our home. Easy to get to with plenty of opportunities to see some local flavor. Künstler Brewing is San Antonio’s first artisanal craft brewpub, re-inventing old beer styles into flavorful and innovative works of craft beer artistry. All beers are designed and brewed by Head Brewer and Owner Vera Deckard, and served with a fusion of German and Texan fare in a warm and welcoming neighborhood environment.

A little bit of a drive from Southtown on the east side under the Hays St. Bridge is Alamo Beer Co. Since December 2014, Alamo Beer Company has proudly brewed the only beer to bear the ALAMO name since the start of Prohibition in 1919. Each package and style of beer has been developed to tell a story of San Antonio, The Alamo, and the fiercely independent Texas spirit. A fun, outdoor space for families and friends.

VIA Downtown Trolleys

VIA Downtown trolleys, constructed like old-fashioned trolleys but with rubber tires, are a fun and inexpensive way to explore the downtown area. The red, yellow, purple, and blue line trolleys serve four routes and stop at all major downtown attractions. The small fare is well worth the cost (you can also purchase a monthly streetcar pass if you think you'll be riding a great deal.) You can pay by cash, with a streetcar token, or with a streetcar pass. Discounts are available for seniors, children, the mobility impaired and Medicare recipients. Transfers between the streetcars are free.
