Wildlife

Yellowstone is known as America’s Serengeti for a reason. You can see animals roaming freely through your the park.
Tower/Lamar Valley - Cooke City Area - A great place to see lots of bison, wolves at Slough Creek, and bears! They don't call it the "Bearmuda Triangle" for no reason! - Eat at Roosevelt Lodge or schedule a cowboy cookout at Yancey's Hole. - Cooke City is a little mountain town with great views and good cheddar bomb burgers and milkshakes at Beds & Buns. - Tower Falls is a great stop for ice cream and an easy waterfall hike. - Mount Washburn - When it's open, if you are going to do one hike - this should be it. It's a three mile up, three mile down hike with amazing views of the entire park. - Bring water, layers, rain gear, and bear spray.

Want to see bison? Check out the vast wide open views of Hayden Valley on your trip. If visiting during the bison rut (breeding season) in late July/early August, make time to simply pull off the road in a pullout and listen to the noises and experience this exciting time of year!

Thermal Features

Visiting the park's geyser basins is like visiting a different world. Be sure to stop at one of the several you'll pass along the way to see and learn more about geysers, hot springs, fumaroles, and mudpots! The park contains over half the world’s thermal features and is host to the tallest geyser in the world, Steamboat Geyser located at Norris Geyser Basin.
- Go early to avoid the crowds! - My favorite place to watch Old Faithful is from the deck (or portochochere) on the second floor of the Old Faithful Inn. You can find ice cream on the first floor and a coffee bar or alcholic beverage bar on the second. If you time it right, you can grab something and wait for the show. - Old Faithful erupts approximately every 90 minutes (=/- 10 minutes). When you get to the Old Faithful area, check on the eruption times at the visitor center so you don't miss it! - A walk around the Old Faithful Geyser Basin is fun but can get really hot. Go early or late in the evening. The evening light is magical as it backlights most of the thermal steam. - Mid-way Geyser Basin is another great spot that provides views of Grand Prismatic Spring. The best viewing is from a trail that you can hike from the Fairy Falls Trailhead to the new overlook, however due to bear activity in the spring it is closed until Memorial Day weekend.

- West Thumb Geyser Basin is a favorite as it is right on the Lake - While in the area, Grant offers a few dining options - a Lake House with OK food and a more expensive Grant Dining Room with better food

- Norris is a great geyser basin with some amazing features and a rustic museum. Plus Steamboat Geyser (the world’s tallest unpredictable geyser) is located here!

Pack lots of layers!

Weather can change in an instant, so be sure to pack lots of layers. If you are going for a hike, be sure to bring a rain jacket as afternoon storms can sneak up on you. It isn't uncommon to wear a puffy jacket, rain jacket, and bathing suit in the same day so come prepared!
