Each year over 250,000 of them flock to the cliffs between Bempton and Flamborough, many to find a mate and raise their young. From April to August the cliffs are alive with nest-building adults or young chicks taking their first faltering steps. Between mid-April and mid-July the much-loved puffin makes its home here. Set in fifty acres of stunning parkland, this historic country house and estate has a great deal to offer to visitors of all ages. With breathtaking views of the East Yorkshire coast, the house and gardens have something for everyone whatever the season. Sewerby Hall and Gardens plays host to an impressive amount of events each year. These include historical re-enactments and living histories, magic days, vehicle rallies, art exhibitions and sporting events, craft fairs and wildlife activities together with the ever-popular weekly Orangery concerts. Sewerby Hall is a grade one listed building constructed throughout 1714 to 1720 by the Greame family. Between 1808 and 1856 numerous additions were made to the house including the portico, stable block, gatehouse, balustrade and conservatory (now the Orangery). It is a very fine example of an early Georgian house with 19th century additions. In September 2013 the house closed to visitors for the start of the refurbishment project which would see it restored to how it would have looked in 1910; the house is now open in all its splendour following this refurbishment. Sewerby Hall has over 50 acres of award-winning (Yorkshire in Bloom Gold: 2008-11) landscaped gardens containing numerous woodland walks, comfortable benches, a huge variety of wildlife and secluded sun-traps as well as the Marie Curie Daffodil Trail throughout spring. The elegant symmetry of the formal gardens and the magnificent Monkey Puzzle trees, reputed to be amongst the oldest in England, are a must-see. Each garden offers its own variety of sights, smells and sounds throughout each of the four seasons. Be introduced to an exciting world of mammals and birds at Sewerby Zoo. Meet a wealth of domestic and wild animals from various countries such as pygmy goats from Africa and llamas from South America. And newest additions are a pair of raccoon dogs. Firm favourites are the Humboldt penguins who are fed every day at 3pm and their ring-tailed lemurs who are fed at 2pm.

The old railway line between Whitby and Scarborough closed in 1965, after 80 years of service, but the 21-mile-long track is still there, providing a wonderful off-road route for cyclists and walkers right along the finest part of the North Yorkshire coast. It's known locally as the 'Cinder Track' (after the original surface laid down for the railway line), and has all sorts of quirks and highlights, from a tea-room fashioned from the former station at Cloughton to clifftop side-routes down into hidden bays like Hayburn Wyke.

Bridlington Priory was founded in 1113 as a house of Augustinian canons. The founder, Walter de Gant, was a friend of the King, Henry I. Benefactors at this time often preferred the Augustinians to other monastic orders as they looked after parishes and were subject to the King and Bishop. The Priory was wealthy from the start and produced scholars and musicians. A later Prior made such an impact on the community with his good works that after his death he was made a saint – St. John of Bridlington. However, at the Reformation the Priory, along with all religious houses, was ‘dissolved’, most of its buildings destroyed and its property seized. The nave only was left and that is what we see today. The Priory was the sole parish church in Bridlington from then until the 19th century. In 1951 it was designated a Grade I Listed Building.

A lighthouse was first built on the Flamborough Headland in 1669 but was never lit. The current lighthouse was built in 1806 and acts as a waypoint for deep sea vessels and coastal traffic as well as marking the Flamborough Headland for vessels heading for the ports of Scarborough and Bridlington. https://www.trinityhouse.co.uk/lighthouse-visitor-centres/flamborough-lighthouse-visitor-centre

CoCA highlights and celebrates our collection of British studio ceramics, which is the largest and amongst the most important in the UK and covers the entire British studio ceramics movement. Formed mainly of large gifts from significant private collectors, it retains the unique personality, passions and obsessions of its creators, providing an insight into the socio-economic development of the British studio ceramics movement. The collection is supported by extensive and fascinating archives, as well as historical collections of ceramics which date back to prehistory. CoCA is housed in two beautiful new gallery spaces on the first floor of York Art Gallery and will present changing exhibitions and displays, new acquisitions, and commissions.

The Stephen Joseph Theatre is a theatre in the round in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England that was founded by Stephen Joseph and was the first theatre in the round in Britain. In 1955, Joseph established a tiny theatre in the round on the first floor of the Public Library.[1] The theatre flourished and in 1976 moved to a supposedly temporary home on the ground floor of the former Scarborough Boys' High School. However, a permanent home proved difficult to find and it was not until late 1988 and the closure of the local Odeon cinema by Rank Leisure that the theatre's long-standing Artistic Director, Alan Ayckbourn, found a suitable venue. The new theatre, known simply as the Stephen Joseph Theatre, opened in 1996 and comprises two auditoria: The Round, a 404-seat theatre in the round, and The McCarthy, a 165-seat end-on stage/cinema. The building also contains a restaurant, shop, and full front-of-house and backstage facilities. The Round boasts two important technical innovations: the stage lift, facilitating speedy set changes, and the trampoline, a Canadian invention which allows technicians particularly easy access to the lighting grid. It is also the place where the image used for the cover of Richard Hawley's album Coles Corner was taken. www.sjt.uk.com

East Riding Theatre aims to deliver top class performances and to enhance the appreciation of Performance Arts in the region of the East Riding and beyond. The Theatre opened its doors for the first time on 12th December 2014; followed by a 23 performance, sell-out show of A Christmas Carol, adapted by Vincent Regan and directed by internationally acclaimed director, Mike Friend. ERT is a professional Theatre and what goes on the stage is paid work. As Sue Kirkman (Theatre Manager) states, ‘the importance of producing our own work will earn ERT credibility as an artistic force to be reckoned with; regionally, nationally and internationally. We may be a small venue but our ambition is huge.’
