From US 19, follow WV16 south through the town of Fayetteville. Turn left on Gatewood Road. Follow Gatewood Road for 1.9 miles, and turn left on Newton Road. The trailhead parking area is 50 yards on the left.

Exit Route 19 at Glen Jean. Travel Route 25, a two-lane road that follows Dunlop Creek. Follow the road over the bridge that crosses the New River. Once on the other side, park at the Historic Thurmond Train Depot and walk down the main street of Thurmond. Picnic next to the town hall.
