Food scene

Great atmosphere. This place is truly one of orange counties best kept secrets. Good Mexican food with amazing outside ambience under the shade of the live oak trees. Margaritas, cocktails, country music on the radio, what else do you need? The best part is it’s walking distance from the house.

Open Friday night to Sunday night by reservation only. It doesn’t look like much on the outside but this place has a deep history in OC and has been frequented by celebs like John Wayne & Richard Nixon. The menu has steaks, salads, hamburgers, fried chicken, and many more. Priced very moderately. Neat inside atmosphere with a live oak tree growing right in the middle of the restaurant.

Hiking

Holy Jim Falls is a really beautiful easy/moderate hike very close to the house that you may enjoy. Take a drive about 4 miles up a gravel improves road through holy Jim canyon and into the Cleveland national forest. You will drive a cross several creek culverts many of which have water running through them (4 wheel drive not necessary although the road can be bumpy you have to drive slow). Park just past the Holy Jim Volunteer fire department and follow the signs to the falls trail head. You will pass by some really neat cabins that were built back in the 20’ & 30’s and still actively used today owned by local families. On the hike you cross the creek on foot many times and can splash the cool clean water on your head to cool down. As you go deeper in the forest you truly escape and find yourself wondering if you are still i Orange County. Beautiful creek crossings and forest before getting to the falls where you can rest, have a picnic, and splash around in the water. It’s about 2.5 mile round trip hike slightly uphill on the way to the falls.

Hiking

O’Neal regional park is walkable from the house and a nice place to take a hike and get some fresh air. There is a seasonal creek that runs through the park. Fun for walking, jogging, bike riding, nature viewing. There is a nice campground that you meander through and plenty of clean restrooms you pass along the way if you need a pit stop. There is a nature center with some very cool wildlife taxidermy and history of the area near the park entrance and visitor center. The park is pretty expansive and you can go for miles if you chose.

Snacks and refreshments

This store is a short walk from the house. If you need to get some basic supplies it’s a convenience store with a country market feel. You can post up outside at one of the several picnic tables and enjoy a refreshment or snack and get some fresh air. You’ll also find beer & wine, fresh tamales ready to be heated up, lottery tickets, a cup of coffee, some cool local T-shirts/sweatshirts and eclectic gifts. In the unit you will find complimentary Oatmeal, Tea, Coffee, and bottled water.
