Chapito is located a couple of minutes' walk from Castelo de Sáo Jorge. Its restaurant is one of the quirkiest in town, a colourful and vibrant eatery set in a mustard-hued townhouse. Tables are also set outside across a courtyard and a small covered terrace, and diners are treated to a spectacular downtown panorama. Food is deliciously appetising -- the menu lists fresh crunchy salads, seafood dishes such as octopus and sweet potato, and assorted toasted sandwiches and tempting desserts. Wine is served by the glass as well as by bottle -- a dry white works wonders on a hot day! Given its location and the quality of service, a meal here is excellent value for money.

So you are looking for good Pasteis de natas, and don't want to trek it out to belem? This is your spot. Each pasteis costs 1 euro. Unlikely there is a line here and the place is open till midnight. What else can you ask for? There's no tables here, go across the street to the plaza and enjoy outdoors. I would recommend ordering 2 or 3... but honestly, I could eat a dozen of these things, you were warned!

A beautiful courtyard overhung with twisting vines embroidered with spotlight fronts this delightful tasca. The cosy interior with its chunky wooden tables and vaulted ceiling is festooned with portraits of Hollywood's finest. Traditional Portuguese gastronomy has a starring role here, with dishes like grilled bream sprinkled with aromatic herbs, and tuna steak in ginger taking the lead. Support acts include an array of fresh crunchy salads, various pasta plates and mouth-watering desserts -- try the banana fritter in a chocolate sauce.

Home cooked meat and fish dishes based on regional Portuguese cuisine, and this cosy little eatery looks the part with its the tiled walls and original stone-arched ceiling. The menu reflects the country kitchen appearance with dishes like carne de porco a alentejana, an intriguing combination of pork and clams bathed in olive oil garnished with coriander, garlic, paprika and sliced lemon. There's an excellent fish and seafood choice and the wine list is impressive for such a modest taverna -- check out the bottles standing to attention along the top shelf that runs along the edge of the salon. This shoe box-sized taberna in Alfama serves up ensopado de borrego (lamb stew and toasted bread) among other rich, heart Portuguese fare. But what really is special about this family-run eatery is the amateur fado performances (fado vadio) that take place between Thursday and Monday. Instead of hosting professional singers, the proprietor, Isabel, invites members of the public to sing in front of diners. Invariably, these are local residents who offer their own unique renditions of favourite fado songs. A surprise is the two cooks, Carla and Paula, who briefly swap kitchen duties for the spotlight and delight the audience with their beautiful singing. The atmosphere is homely and wonderfully amateurish but absolutely genuine. The singing is from the heart and makes for one of the most authentic dining experiences in the city.

This extraordinary structure was built at the turn of the century by the Portugal-born French architect Raoul de Mesnier du Ponsard (an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel, explaining the structure's similarities to Paris' Eiffel Tower), to connect downtown to Bairro Alto (the lowest and highest points of the city). Originally powered by steam, it is 45 meters (147ft) high, and remains an interesting example of post-Eiffel iron architecture. The top of the Neo-Gothic tower, reached via a spiral staircase, has a cafe with splendid views of the city, including over Rossio Square, the castle and the river.

Arguably the most popular Lisbon beach, and one of the area's largest (nearly 2km long) Blue-flagged Carcavelos is a fifteen-minute walk from the railway station along Avenida Jorge V. Its close proximity to the city makes it popular with families, especially at weekends during the summer months. An enormous amphitheatre of golden sand backed by rolling dunes, Guincho's spectacular setting is reason enough to visit (it's also a Blue Flag location). The ocean, however, is equally appealing, not least for windsurfers and kite boarders. This is one of Europe's premier water sports locations and while the waves are usually too big to swim in -- not to mention the peril of strong undertows -- seasoned surfistas will enjoy a truly memorable occasion.
