Built by lumber barons at the beginning of the last century, the Columbia River Highway was designed for beauty from its inception. The world's best road builders were brought in from Germany to create a path of wonder through this amazing section of the Gorge so that the richest men of their day would have someplace nice to drive their newly acquired automobiles. Lumber barons (the tech billionaires of their day) donated some of the most beautiful properties to create a road of such lush wonder that numerous automobile commercials are shot here every year. In one section, you can stop every mile or two, hike in a few hundred feet and see a stunningly waterfall, rinse & repeat.

Several of Portland's most beautiful parks are within a short walk from the house, especially the Arboretum, which is within a half mile. Washington Park, the Oregon Zoo, the World Forestry Center, the Rose Garden and the Pittock Mansion are all within 2 miles of the house.
Full of hiking trails and beautiful nature scenes, this iconic Portland park is one of the crown jewels of the Pacific Northwest.

Portland's Japanese Garden is renowned as one of the most beautiful and authentic outside of Japan. It is a truly magical place, although, unlike almost every other park in the city, there is an entry fee of $14.95. This is the more expensive than the only other paid park (that I know of) in Portland, the Chinese Garden ($10) downtown, but the Japanese Garden is many times larger.

The Marquam Trail is a section of a new(er) Portland hiking loop called The 4T: Trail, Tram, Trolley & Train.
